Katsuo Raiden

Katsuo is a head-strong, proud and willful individual. When he gets his mind set on something, he is unlikely to ever change it and will relentlessly pursue his goals and ideals. He knows exactly what he is capable of and he is very confident in himself and his own abilities. Despite all of this, he is a kind and good-natured soul, who is never afraid to lend someone a hand. His confidence should not be mistaken for arrogance as he does not view anyone as lower than him, or beneath his help.

Katsuo also has a streak of curiosity in him, much like his father Tarek, and so he likes trying new things and experimenting with the ways things are already done. It also means he gets bored of things quite quickly. His parents, Tarek and Sanaki, have raised him to know right from wrong and have taught him much about honour, integrity, and selflessness. As a result, Katsuo has a very strong set of morals, and will go out of his way to do what is right, regardless of the consequences.

Katsuo has a very strong sense of duty, and can be very serious when he needs to be. In general, however, he is a cheerful and optimistic person. He doesn’t tend to get angry very quickly, unless it concerns matters which are very near to his heart. He is definitely not shy around people, and has a very extroverted personality.

Katsuo thrives on situations others might call stressful or difficult. He adapts fast and thinks on his feet. He can form elaborate plans very quickly, although he doesn’t always think them through, and tends to take leadership when others are inclined to panic. He has knack for survival and never backs down from a challenge. In fact, he enjoys looking for ways he can push or challenge himself.


Being the son of Fire Nation General Tarek Raiden and Ex-assassin Sanaki Zelgius, Katsuo had the opportunity to start his training from a very young age. He began learning very basic firebending and martial arts techniques soon after his second birthday. The fact that he was so young meant that the training wasn’t very serious at first, and he had plenty of time to be a normal kid. He was never forced to train, and wasn’t pushed to perform anything he was incapable of doing. Instead, his parents made training a fun, family activity, where they would set aside time every day to learn more, and spend time together. It was an activity he always looked forward to.

The results were well worth it. Katsuo sped through the basic forms, quickly moving on to more advanced techniques, he was a natural born athlete and a firebending prodigy. By the time Katsuo turned 18, he had become a gifted firebender and swordsman.

Vigorous training from his parents, hard work, dedication and some natural skill, has honed Katsuo’s skills into what they are today. He is a deadly combatant who uses his immense physical strength to his advantage when fighting or even bending, and is a very versatile fighter.

Firebending: When it comes to firebending, Katsuo is an expert, advanced well beyond his years. He is a powerful, almost primal firebender, focusing more on strength and instinct then on flawless technique. He can easily summon massive amounts of deadly, super-hot flames, and manipulate them very well.
Lightningbending: Although Katsuo only learned how to create lightning in his teenage years, he quickly got the hang of it. Especially since he was taught by Tarek to control his own chi energy from a young age. All that was left was for Katsuo to separate his negative and positive energies and then let them loose as they came crashing together again. He also learned how to redirect and channel lightning.
Martial Arts and Sword-Fighting: Where Katsuo’s father, Tarek, had trained him in firebending, his mother, Sanaki, trained him in her area of expertise, close-quarters combat. This consisted mostly of martial arts, as well as swordplay. He became a very formidable close-quarters fighter, able to take a lot of hits, and deal out massive damage thanks to his brute strength.
Heat Sense: Katsuo is one of the few people in the world who knows how to utilise a special and unique firebending ability, created by his mother and called ‘heat sense’. He was taught how to use it from a young age, although he didn’t have much love for it and didn’t pay as much attention as he should have during his ‘heat sense’ lessons. Nonetheless, he knows more than enough about it and uses the technique often and much to his advantage during fights.



(222) Katsuo shares many of his father’s features, bearing a strong resemblance to Tarek, although he also shares some features with his mother. He has a handsome face, a friendly demeanour, and a roguish charm about him, which makes him very approachable. His silver-grey eyes have an adventurous; perhaps even a mischievous look to them, although they can also be warm and kind.

He has thick, jet-black hair just like Sanaki. Growing up he kept it long and messy, but when he joined the military he shaved it into a buzz cut. This was mainly for practical purposes, like keeping it neat and manageable, although in a way he was emulating his father, without having to shave it completely off.

He has a very athletic build and is really fit. He is muscular, though not overly so, meaning he doesn’t look out of proportion or abnormally large. He wears simple clothing, usually of Fire Nation design, consisting of durable boots, brown military style trousers, a grey shirt and a dark red jacket. Of course, during military operations and missions he wears the Fire Nation military uniform. If he is anywhere he suspects trouble, he carries two Katanas strapped to his back and a short wakizashi strapped to his left leg, other than that, he relies on his bending and fists as his weapons.

Katsuo was born into a very close knit and loving family, and spent a lot of time with his parents and his twin sister, Kaede. He had a happy childhood, full of fun and mischief. He would spend hours on end playing with his beloved sister, though he would occasionally tease her by pulling her skirt down. One of their favourite games was “Novai and Zulera” and he would always play the part of “Big Stupid Head Novai” himself. He was somewhat of a trouble maker in school, and got in regular trouble over fights. He didn’t always start them, but he sure as hell finished them, his sister steadfastly at his side through it all.

Growing up, there were two things he really loved besides his family, they were dragons and fighting (This was one of the main reasons he eventually joined up in the military). He always got super excited about anything to do with dragons, especially stories, his favourite being the one where his dad’s best friend, Kako Anthropos, met a dragon face to face and killed it.

Katsuo was as mischievous as a little boy could be. His grades were not poor, despite the fact that he hardly ever paid attention in class. He was completely different when he trained with his parents however. He loved training, loved fighting, and he flew through whatever forms and techniques his parents taught him. He did neglect the spiritual and philosophical sides though, as he found that boring. Despite this, he is very well-trained and knowledgeable about both the spiritual and physical sides of bending.


When Katsuo was six, a terrorist group attacked the Zelgius estate while Tarek and Sanaki were out and kidnapped him and his sister. The mastermind of the plot being a powerful master named Raikou. He used a small army to distract the estates groundskeeper, Zerviah Foxx, a hundred and sixteen year old waterbending terror that outlived two great wars and now served as Tarek and Sanaki’s help. Of course it was a frightening ordeal, and Katsuo bonded even closer with his sister because of it. Since that day Katsuo never liked being far from Kaede.

While they were held hostage, Katsuo insisted that they try and escape, a thought which Kaede wholeheartedly agreed with. After a day locked in a small room, a couple of guards came to move them to a secondary hideout. Katsuo knew this was their chance. As they were led to the other camp, Katsuo feigned an injury. When one of the guards came to investigate, Katsuo launched the largest fireball he could into the man’s face and made a break for it with his sister.

They ran into a forest, and after evading the pursuing guards they wandered around lost for ages, until Tarek and Sanaki eventually found them. He never forgot that day, remembering how happy he was to see his daddy and mommy and how happy they were to find them. After a lot of hugs, kisses and happy tears, the Raiden family returned to their normal lives.

Over the next couple of years Katsuo grew into the young man he is today. The rest of his story is yet to tell as he moves into adulthood and begins the rest of his life.
