| Ayaka Noguchi Full Name: Ayaka Noguchi Gender: Female Age: 20 Element: Air Birthplace: Southern Air Temple Position: Air Nomad Training: Airbending (Intermediate), Hand to Hand Combat (Intermediate), Gliding (Intermediate), Chi-Blocking (beginner) Personality: Ayaka is a calm, happy, curious, and inquisitive young woman. At first glance, she appears to be a standard Air Nomad, self controlled and easy-going, observing the world for how it is and going with the flow of it all, but at heart, she strives to learn more and be more, about anything there is to learn, to understand it all beyond what the Air Temples could offer, and meet the people of the world. Quiet and reserved with most, even the fellow Nomads in the temple, Ayaka's comments are held for the moments when silence would not suffice on its own. She follows the standards of the Air Nomad culture as a fast learner, spending an hour or more a day in meditation of the spirits and the world as well as being at peace in all ways by avoiding conflict, but feels an outsider deep within. There is a disconnect somewhere with the peace an Airbender is supposed to feel and her feelings that she hides beneath a light, balanced, observant outside. Not a leader or a follower, she enjoys her time alone, being able to follow her impulses to explore and fly as she wishes. She does like to offer small smiles to the world, smiling at the little things that amuse her, most often seen with the rush of joy she gets while gliding or bending. Ayaka tries to find the best in everything, against that anything can be completely evil. This leaves her with a bit of what some might call naive-ness, and what others might say a pure goodness. Very trusting of others, she does have a trickle of doubt that she ignores in hopes of the best, but does tend to be rooted in her "gut feelings" while in battle. Hope fills every section of her emotions, overcoming the feelings of rejection and confusion from within. While she has no regret or shame for any of her actions, pain is something Ayaka finds difficulty in reacting to and coping with, not in herself, but in others. For this reason and her teachings, she vows never to take a human life, for no reason. Somewhat stubborn and focused on her journey to understanding the mysteries of the world, she can be misunderstood as being aloof to those around her, despite that she is not. Abilities: Ayaka's pride and joy is her gliding abilities, hone by many years escaping meditations and lessons flying through air currents at the Air Temples. She uses her staff in her fighting movements, both defensively and offensively, and is never seen without it. The love she has for her glider prompted her to learn the inner workings and crafting of the pieces, allowing her to modify and build staffs for other Nomads. Young Airbenders know Ayaka for this, and will often run up to her giggling, hoping she has a new staff in store for them. As she was raised by Air Bending Masters and Nomads at the Southern Air Temple, she has many of the skills and abilities of Air Benders; these abilities include a extremely light gait, making almost no noise as she walks, jumping higher than normal humans and other benders, as well as being extremely nimble and agile. Her airbending skills are something she takes great pride in, spending many hours practicing forms and moving through Airbending gates with blind folds in the quiet hours of the morning. A traveling nomad taught her the basics of Chi-Blocking, which she learned only with a curiousity. Unsure on if she would ever use it, she did not continue past the very crude basics, but hopes to one day learn more of the art. Though Ayaka's airbending is well developed and strong enough to keep most enemies at bay, she has created a unique style of hand to hand combat that, much like her Airbending, is based on moving with the attacker and using their strengths against them to stop a fight. Almost purely defensive, she is fluid and quick in her movements, never seeming to stay in one place long enough to comfortably predict. She watches the other person's eyes, waiting for their next attack to be given away in their expression before sliding around their attack. This hand to hand combat ability is something she tries to hide, as she does not obviously wish to ever get into a situation in which it would be used to hurt someone else. Appearance: Height: 5"7 Weight: 136lbs Eyes: Light blue Hair: Brown with Auburn highlights. She has parted long bangs that hang a little loose, and a braid that runs to her lower back, which is usually intertwined with a garnet red ribbon. Skin: Pale, with light freckles across her cheek bones. Ayaka stands out obviously as an Airbender, wearing the yellow and orange of the Air Nomads. She has a long robe of red-orange that parts over one of her hips, landing just behind her thigh and exposing her back, held by a matching sash belt, instead of the cape of beginners to represent her status as a confident Air Bender. Beneath the robe, she has a yellow garnet on, cutting comfortably above her breast, and hanging in a V below her sash, a faint gold embroidery going around the bottoms. Underneath, she has light brown loose pants that tighten underneath her knee, loose enough for her fluid and practiced dancing like movements to be unrestricted. These expose fit and carved calves, leading down to light leather booties, tied with the same red ribbon in her hair. Around her wrists are bandages and red ribbon, there to support her joint as she balances her weight on her hands while bending. This outfit is part of her, and like her dark wood glider staff, is always with her. When the passerby takes a moment to look away from the odd and bright Air Nomad get up, Ayaka is a bright and pretty young woman. Her face always seems gentle and kind, which brings your attention straight to her light blue eyes, which always seem to be watching the world, framed by gentle freckles. With brown hair that always seems to be moving across her forehead, she seems to be constantly connected to the wind, especially in the gentle, floating walk she has. Overall, she is very athletic in a slim, light boned way, with an attractive sense about her. Weaponry & Other Gear: Item Name Gliding Staff Materials: Made of a dark, flexible, wood, with canvas attached on wings. Description: The staff is made in traditional design, with gentle curves along the shaft hiding wings and a lower fin for gliding. The wood is dark, flexible but firm, with air channels built through for best conduction of airbending. When opened by a quick blast of air, the canvas fans are red, matching the ribbons that are Ayaka's favorite color. She has made slight modifications to make it more sturdy for taking stronger winds, and taking a few not too strong hits in a fight. History: Ayaka was born in the Southern Air Temple to a non-bending mother and a non-Nomad Airbender on a cold winter day. The father, hoping his child would inherit his bending ability, pulled his pregnant wife on a donkey up the cliffs of the Southern Air Temple, and begged the Nomads to take his precious daughter into their Temple, to raise her as a Nomad and teach her the ways of their culture properly. The kind spirit of the Master took the child in, and allowed one of the older women to raise her, while she sent through her trainings. Her birth parents left after she was born, and were not to be seen again. Years later, the realization she had been given away came to her in a meditation, and her only response was to ask the old woman, her "Grandmother", if she was not wanted. Grandmother smiled at the young girl, pulling her close, and simply said "You have always been wanted, and will forever have a place in this world", after which Ayaka never thought a doubt about her past. Her childhood was filled with mornings of meditation lined in rows of orange capes with the other novices, and many hours spent moving through Air Bending Gates and forms, with evenings spent moving with air currents in the large empty sky around the Temple. As the years went on, the cultures and beliefs of the Nomads grew as part of her. Even after finishing her novice training as an Airbender, she rises early in the morning to fly to a lonely precipice to focus on the spirits and flow of the world in meditation, before practice her forms on beams above the ground. Ayaka felt most connected to the world and herself as she was bending, but found a spiritual barrier not so long after her Grandmother passed away, one that bit at her, whispering that she would never be able to truly represent the Air Nomad's peace with themselves. This was something that did not disappear, but was buried as she grew more involved with the art. At 18, she worked with a master to try to solve this feeling, but he only said it would be for her to learn. Ayaka spent the past year walking through the Temple's halls feeling trapped through their ancient carvings and tall walls, flying further and further away from the Temple on her glider before she knew she had to leave. Leaving the Temple now meant putting her Airbending training on hold, as she wasn't likely to encounter many Air Masters on her way through the world, but it was a desire within her to leave. Yet many moons passed, as she looked into the clouds and tried to learn as much as she could, before the day came when she left. That morning, she came back from her meditation and interrupted the Master's meditation to announce her leaving, to explore and learn of the cultures of the Nations, with hopes of finding her peace and seeing the other Air Temples. He knew in her eyes that she was ready, asking that she remember who she was on her journey, and come back one day, with a smile so rarely seen. She left that afternoon, after saying goodbye to the young Airbenders she had glider raced with, and jumped into the skies on her journey. Ayaka is currently traveling the Nations, with no romantic ties or companions, standing out as a Air Nomad in a very different world from what she knew to be home. There was something special about flying. How could I explain it? It was one of those moments in life, when everything hangs in balance, all at once, that if you were not there, you would never truly be able to understand. Something amazing in the feel of it all, from the very start. It was an emotion that spread a peace through every inch of my body, a surging power, a second of utter perfectness. I sent a wind current through the channel of my staff, feeling the wings and fins push out at the exact moment that my feet left the ground with a burst of air. And there it was: I was flying, gliding like the hundreds of thousands of Airbenders before me. Even with hours of practicing the same moves the Air Nomads of the past did, this was the one thing that made me feel most connected to the world.
As the wind currents caught underneath my glider’s red canvas wings, I heard a young voice shout from behind me. “Ayaka!” Over my shoulder, there was the parachuting cape and pale yellow fans of one of the novice boys, Kato, catching my tailwind.
“Good morning, Kato,” I called out, smiling at his unique and goofy technique. I pulled my tail forward with my leg, pulling wind back enough to slow to his position.
“Race?” He said with an innocent, mischievous smile that only a young child could have, flying quickly forward, so that I was left behind for a moment. I pushed the air with a natural movement, one that had become second nature, easily catching up to the Kato. I flew my glider above him, in his blind spot, laughing at how he looked around, desperately trying to locate me. Beneath him, the blank air was filled with gentle, wet clouds, where the mountains created a rolling sea that framed the Southern Air Temple. We turned back to the temple, wind rushing past our faces and through our gliders, as easy as day. Before our normal finish line, the bridge above the training area, I rose up into a cloud, and sped up, before diving down straight in front of Kato. I heard him yell as he spun too sharply, losing his lift for a moment, long enough for me to be far in the lead. I pulled my glider fan blades in, and fell for a moment, flying without wings, onto the bridge, pushing air underneath myself to soften the landing. Kato slide to a stop a few feet away, his staff posed in his hand as a drag. “You win again, Ayaka. One day I’m going to win!”
“One day, little one,” I said, smiling at him before tucking my staff in my sash behind my back, returning his bow. I waited, watching him jog down to his class, greeting the other students, some attempting to learn Avatar Aang’s airball, before turning towards the city, the rising towers pushing the limits of the sky. Maybe today is the day, I wondered. The day to see what’s beyond this Temple, to fly somewhere… somewhere new.
