PostSubject: The Artist meets the Disaster   The Artist meets the Disaster EmptySun Aug 24, 2014 11:39 pm

Lukka Kaskae

Finally, Lukka had made it to the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se! He was definitely revealing himself as a first time visitor with all of his shameless rubbernecking, too. Still, the teenage waterbender made his way down the main street of the Middle Ring's market district, occasionally turning all around, trying to see everything.

There was one thing that he actually needed, however, and that was a place to buy clothes for this warmer climate... As good as Lukka thought he looked in his fur-trimmed armor, he was sweating like a stuck pig. No, he needed something cooler (and for once in his life, he meant 'cooler' in the literal sense). If only he could find a clothing shop, or a boutique, or... A tailor! There, across the lane, was a Tailor's shop! Just what he needed!

Hurrying as fast as he could without bumping into anyone or being run down by a carriage, the skinny teen made his way over, quickly climbing the front steps. Pulling the door open to step inside, Lukka began to take a look around, without even bothering to announce his presence beyond a loud, "Wooooah...! This place is great!"

Alice Koshu DeSiete

Business had been slow that morning, and so Alice was just spending most of his time dilly-dallying by drawing and sketching new designs, or pictures of various people. he had a pile of sketchbooks out, with different things labelled on each one. he was very well-organized. He had men, women, all kinds of different ages and body types, and things from completed designs to drafts and concepts, and had plenty of sketches that were just silly doodles. he even had a little comic book series going about a world where 24 kids had to fight to the death until only one remained. Secretly, the main character was trying to rebel against the establishment and stop this needless killing... an author avatar perhaps?

Regardless, he was practically running the store (he was a manager at the moment; just a few steps below something like general manager or owner), and so he dealt with anyone who came into the place.
Granted, he was in for a surprise when someone practically busted the door down as he came bursting in. But, Alice collected himself, closed his current sketchbook, and approached the young man, who couldn't have been much older than he was, though was a good 7 or so inches taller than him.

"can I help you?" he wasn't sure if this boy was trying to make a scene here, of if he genuinely wanted to do some business. Luckily, while he was small and young, Alice did have a professional air to him--and was not afraid to prove it.

Lukka Kaskae

The adult tone to the voice made Lukka freeze, dreading turning around. Not that he hated adults or anything, but they - at least, the ones back home - were always getting on him about something. Straighten up, sharpen those spears properly, stop poking that polar bear dog... It was always something (not that he didn't usually deserve it).

When he turned around, however, the young teenager was confronted with another teenage boy! His panicked expression melted immediately into a grin. "Hey man," He greeted casually, lifting his hand in a sort of wave, "Don't do that... I thought you were coming to crack the ice." With that Water Tribe slang, Lukka laughed brightly, "The name's Lukka Kaskae; nice to meet ya!" His lifted hand was then thrust out, offering a handshake to the other boy.

Looking around, he did then ask, "So, you know anything about what guys wear around here, to keep cool? It's so crackin' hot and humid that I'm sweating through to my toes, here." Little did Lukka know, the other young man actually worked here, and was far beyond 'knowing anything' about clothes.

Alice might have been small, but he did have a good solid handshake, instead of some wimpy dead-fish-style thing. Even if he was out here, he was also still a waterbender. "Alice DeSiete." he introduced himself, "A pleasure." He never really cared about how his name might sound, and he was not easily insulted. A lot of stuff either went over his head, or just passed right through him.

"I know anything you'd ever need to know," he assured the taller boy, "what are your measurements and what are your styles..." he was already walking back towards his desk to rummage through his files. Sure he had mountains of sketchbooks, but he also had files and could point you to any article of clothing in the store. He was a very organized young man. Alice's own clothes were simple and blue; his skin was lighter than Lukka's, but the style was very siple and casual without looking too grungy or anything. Alice always dressed at least somewhat stylish... and the notion that the things he had just said might have just gone over the other boy's head... didn't occur to him.

After shaking his hand, the other boy started going on about measures and styles and a whole lot of other things that Lukka had never encountered before. To be fair, because he had two older brothers, most of his own clothes were hand-me-downs or resewn to be reworn, so it's not like he'd ever really been clothes shopping before.

So it may have seemed condescending, but his best answer was: "Well... I'm a bit shorter than the back end of a polar bear dog, and a about as wide as a spirit pole..?" With that, he smiled awkwardly, eyebrows knit slightly, hoping that it was sufficient but knowing that it probably was not.

Alice also tried not to be condescending, but the fact that this boy knew *nothing* about clothing and sizes meant that Alice's job had just gotten more difficult. Welp... he would persevere. he was not a quitter--not that easily at least. Besides... it was important to look good... not necessarily one's bes

"here... spread your arms, and let me know if you like things a little long or a bit shorter." by "shorter" he would mean more close to Lukka's size. Longer meant he wanted something a size or two larger, which he did a lot. he did seem to be glancing at him, trying to gauge how much of his clothing was thick and furry versus how big his body was underneath. Not that he wanted to see the boy naked or anything; just that seeing him in thinner and/or less clothing would help him more accurately get the measurements he needed. A lot of people were skeptical of the small boy, but one time was all it took to turn them into believers... but he hadn't really had to deal with any boys his age (or too many males at all)...

Lukka Kaskae

Following directions, though he didn't know exactly what was happening at first, Lukka held his arms out to allow the other boy to measure them. "Um... longer, I guess?" He answered awkwardly, still not sure exactly what he was talking about.

Glancing around the shop, Lukka did see a lot of clothes, though they mostly looked like women's clothes to him. As his eyes fell upon some lingerie out in the open, the teenager blushed, looking pointedly in the exact opposite direction. "So - uh..." He tried to strike up conversation, to distract himself, "What kinda clothes do guys wear around here, Al? Everyone back home dressed like this, because of the cold." He hadn't even thought about shortening Alice's name - it just happened.

He was fidgeting a little, as Alice moved the measuring tape over the padded armor, but not enough to make the other boy's job too difficult. Lukka was just a guy who found it hard to sit completely still for too terribly long.

Alice noted the measurements, also subtracting a few inches from them for the sake of the thick, padded clothing. He was very good at his job too, so it wasn't like he'd suddenly come back with something a few sizes too small or anything like that.

Most of the clothes were in fact for women, because women were the ones usually much more concerned with fancy clothes or looking their best. But, there were plenty of selections for men as well, of all ages and in all styles.
A question he knew though! finally they were getting somewhere. He didn't even really realize that he had called him Al. Most kids his ages made fun of his feminine name rather than shorten it. Either way... he shifted his focus.
"Well... I'm a waterbender myself even if I don't look like it," he admitted, "no good at all, really... but this is what I wear." he spread his arms, showing off his dark blue pants and his baggy shirt. "but if you want something different... and maybe some shoes or sandals too... I can certainly help." he was being quite a professional lad, he figured. He was quite happy.

Lukka Kaskae

Taking a look at Alice's clothes, Lukka tried to think of what he wanted. He was a fan of blue, obviously, but he also liked browns and purples and whites... mixing things up a bit, y'know. From what he was wearing now, he also knew that his arms got hot here, as did his legs - surprisingly, his chest and center were fine. So, with that in mind, he ventured, "Would it be... awkward, to have smaller sleeves? Or none at all?" He didn't want to look like a dork, of course - he'd suffer sweating in order to not.

"Or, um, shorter pants?" Lukka was basically requesting shorts, but wasn't sure what they were called; no one had them in the Northern Water Tribe, after all. He'd also explain his color preferences to Alice, so that he'd know those too. Lukka wasn't too worried about appearing scrawnier here, since his siblings - the source of his insecurities - were back home. Shit, even his sister was buffer than he was, which just wasn't fair.

It was clear, however, that the teenage boy might need some sample clothes or visuals to help him decide, just because he was so new to this culture. Simple things such as clothes were a whole new world to Lukka, now.

"mmm?" Alice tilted his head, "Nah... shorter sleeves are fairly common, unless you're goin' somewhere fancy for the evening. you can have either/or.... follow me." he began to lead the taller boy towards clothing his size, in various bright shades of blue or green or red or orange or purple or what have you. This definitely appeared to be summerwear, at the very least. Ba Sing Se did seem to have four seasons.
"aye, shorter pants can happen too," he chuckled, motioning a few racks down at where there were shorter pants. If or when he picked something out, he'd point him in the direction of the changing room if he needed to find it. This was a pretty large place, after all, but to little Alice, it was practically home, so he knew it inside and out.

"Luckily, most of this stuff is pretty cheap," he reassured him, for he didn't imagine kids to have much money (then again, he was an odd one here, given his astounding success at getting on the good side of the nobles). "but... lemme know if you see anything you like." if he got something of the wrong size, he could easily check to see if it was in his size, and so on. He had everything planned out.

Lukka Kaskae

Before Alice could even finish telling Lukka to speak up if he saw anything he liked, the older teen had an armful of stuff that he'd pulled off the racks. Stopping dead in his tracks, expression sheepish, he coughed, "Um - I like these..." Holding the clothes out, he gave a wide, awkward grin, knowing that he'd probably messed up. "I'll... uh, help you put 'em all back, Al. I promise..." It was actually a little impressive; how much damage he could do in how little time, with as little noise.

Most of the things that were pulled off of their hangers were male-cut tanktops (though a female-cut top or two might've snuck in) and shorts that would fall to just below Lukka's knees. All in all, it looked like the boy was planning a trip to the beach, or something; which made sense, considering what temperatures he was used to, after all.

"Oh, lemme show you how much I've got..." Lukka began, when the subject of money came up. Placing the rather impressive pile of clothing down on the front counter, the older teen began rifling through his various satchels and packs, looking for his coin bag. "Ah-ha! There you are... Thought you could hide from me, did'ya?" He spoke directly to the small bag as he pulled it out - it didn't look very impressive.

Alice's eyes widened briefly, and for a moment he didn't really know how to react. "Uhhmm... right. let's sort these out first and then see what we can find... please don't take anything else off the racks just yet." He didn't really trust that he'd know where he got everything, so Alice would deal with it. But... one step at a time. He couldn't have it all happen at once, after all. If he could keep this guy occupied, then perhaps they could accomplish something together.

Needless to say, Alice raised an eyebrow at the small sack of coins. Well... he was already knowing what to look for... blue, and cheap, perhaps. Cheap especially though, since he mentioned other colors.
"So... this matches with this or this..." he began explaining, removing (with a slight chuckle) a few female articles that had joined the fray, "these colors go good with that... and so here are basically your options." Somehow, the smaller boy had made a miracle out of Lykka's madness, and managed to throw together a couple of outfits that might just match, AND might have fit his small and meager budget.

Thought it might surprise the younger teen, Lukka was true to his word. Anything that wasn't laid out in an outfit was set aside, and thus the dork who made the mess in the first place was returning the unused garments to those little plastic hanger thingies. Okay, so maybe they weren't perfect, but he was trying! Not that it looked terrible; just inexpert. It would probably still be easier to straighten clothes on the hangers than to hang them all up one by one.

He had paid attention the whole time Alice had spoken, as well, and nodded as 'color matching' was explained to him. Lukka's clothes were made for practicality, more than anything, but they seemed to work okay... Just not at the height of fashion.

"So... now what?" Lukka did ask, once things were more-or-less tidied up and the outfits were laying out. The concept of a dressing room was a bit beyond him, and so when Alice told him that he could try the clothes on, the older teen started untying and loosening his clothes right then and there, in the middle of the Tailors' Shop. Literal teen is just a tad too literal...

Alice noticed his attempts to help, and they were good enough for the time being. a good shake might straighten them out, and so he would worry about them later. There were carts for unused/unpurchased clothing, kind of like books at a library. Alice snagged one of these and hung the clothing on it, before turning back to his newfound acquaintance.

While Alice did have and sell plenty of fashionable outfits, he had looked for something simple and practical out of the clothes Lukka had chosen.
Of course, after suggesting that he try them on, his eyes shot open in surorise at the taller boy's reaction.
"No, no! not here, you goof." he laughed, taking his hand, "there are dressing rooms just for that." he led him to one of said rooms. "Just go in, change into what you want, check yourself out in the mirror, and come back out with the ones you like or don't like..." he explained. Not a difficult concept now that he had heard of it, yes?

"Oh." Lukka blinked like a dork as Alice lead him to the dressing room, though he did make sure to actually snag the clothes that he'd be changing into. "Uh, sorry, again," The older teen apologized with an awkward laugh, before disappearing into the changing room, clothes in hand.

While it didn't take him long to try each outfit on, being that they were quite simple (requiring nothing more than being pulled on into place), he did spend a decent amount of time inspecting his appearance, turning this way and that. Finally, the older teen decided that he needed a second opinion.

Rather than calling for Alice, he walked right out into the other room, wearing a blue tank top with a white design around the chest and a pair of brown shorts. "Hey Al?" Lukka called, scratching at the nape of his neck, "Can you tell me how this looks...?"

Alice gave an awkward but friendly enough chuckle. "heh... it's fine... just... take your time in there and lemme know what else I can do for you if anything..." He'd wait until he was done (he didn't see a reason to ever go in with someone while they were changing clothes of course)

Thus, he waited, and unlike most teenage boys, he understood that sometimes trying on clothes took time. There were plenty of ladies that would actually come to him for advice on the matter. While he did not have many other talents elsewhere... Alice *did* have a knack for fashion. He was good at what he did.

When he saw the taller boy emerge, he glanced at him curiously and analytically.
"mmm... I'd say it looks fine." he nodded, "you'd look fine barefooted, or maybe with some light brown sandals or something..." he had chosen what had matched what after all, and it *seemed* that thankfully Lukka had at least followed that much of his instruction, and so hopefully getting him into something new like this would be a problem soon easily resolved.

The older teen laughed at himself, realizing that he'd completely forgotten footwear. "Oh yeah... I guess this would look pretty stupid with furry, heavy boots, huh?" He grinned sheepishly once again, "Um - you wouldn't happen to sell those sanders-things here, would'ja?" Lukka had no idea what they were, but he definitely wasn't used to walking around barefoot, either - his feet probably wouldn't be able to handle the hard streets of Ba Sing Se.

Otherwise, Lukka had pretty much decided on purchasing the clothes that he was currently wearing, along with maybe one or two variations of the same design. It was a LOT more comfortable than his padded armor was, in this climate. He was pretty grateful to Alice for helping him out so much; it felt as though he'd made his first friend outside of the Northern Water Tribe (even if the younger boy was unlikely to feel the same, just yet - at least Lukka was amusing, right?).

It wasn't like Alice had *friends* per se, except perhaps fellow tailors/designers/fashionestas/etc... but as for kids his age? yeah. he was pretty much devoid of any of those. So, perhaps this dorky kid who hadn't the slightest idea about fashion (luckily Alice was there to help, right?), might just be a first for him...

"well, there's always barefoot... it's a popular style here in the Earth Kingdom..." he did wiggle his bare toes at this. Not that Alice hated shoes; just that he did kind of treat this place like his house sometimes given how much time he spent there.

When he asked for sandals (not sanders... silly goof), Alice did grab him a cheap and sturdy pair. this boutique had all kind of fashions, but also had plenty of simple and practical stuff, since it was in the Middle Ring rather than the Upper Ring... so it was catered towards people who could afford a little of both rather than being unable to afford one or being "too above" the other.

After letting him put on the sandals (which he was fine with him doing right there) he glanced up at the slightly taller lad. "well... what do ya think? ready to check out?" he nodded towards the desk, where payments were made.

"Yup!" Lukka announced cheerfully, bringing himself and his few extra outfits up to the front, in order to purchase them. His padded armor and fur-lined clothes had been stowed away in his bag (which was now quite heavy), and thankfully were not littering the dressing room. Surprisingly, the older teen had also returned anything he hadn't wanted to their hangers, putting them on that rolling rack thing that Alice had used earlier. He was a big helper!

His coin pouch was actually filled with a mix of copper and silver, so this wasn't about to completely break the bank. Lukka was able to buy everything fairly easily. Then, however, he glanced out the large glass doors and hummed. "Hey Al, you know your way around here, yeah?" He turned back to the other teen with a bright grin, "Wanna show me around? I haven't seen the sights or anything yet - and if y'do come with me, I'll buy us some blubber nuggets...~"

Thankfully for Alice, the Water Tribe blubber nuggets weren't too popular in Ba Sing Se, but at least Lukka offered, right? After all, he didn't know.

Alice was actually surprised at how well he cooperated. Not to say that his store suffered vandalism or messes from teenagers, but the fact that he did in fact try to help was something that was not lost on the smaller boy at all. While he did not voice it outright, he definitely approved.

He was surprised that the coin pouch contained more than just coppers, and heaved a small sigh of relief knowing that he could pay for them. Not that he might not have helped him out... just that it might have saved them from an awkward situation.
Lykka's next question was an interesting one. Alice was talented enough that he kind of got to set his own hours... which he liked. So... if he needed to take a day off or even just a few hours... well, he could.

"sure..." he shrugged, "it's not like there are monsters in the city... what could possibly go wrong?" he didn't exactly know where the other boy wanted to go, but he'd give him a tour of at least part of it. There'd be no way they could tour all of Ba Sing Se in anything less than a year.
After stepping outside, he therefore asked "what do ya wanna do first?"

Laughing at the younger teen's words, Lukka answered, "Well, if you ask the Northern Tribe Elders... a lot could still go wrong, with me around. Loose traps, spears missing, prey scattered... One time, I accidentally got this mother polarbear-dog all cracked off, right? And - " Suddenly, realizing how bad this must have sounded, he cut himself off, chuckling awkwardly. "I mean... what could go wrong, indeed?!"

On the subject of what he wanted to do first, however... the older teen grinned. "Back home, it's all ice and snow - what is there to do around here, for fun?" Lukka asked Alice, sounding eager and excited. If one didn't know better, they'd assume that he'd left home simply to have a good time in the sun, or something similar.

Alice Koshu DeSiete

Alice couldn't help but laugh at the boy's story. "well... I bet that was something then, wasn't it?" he could already picture it in his head, and might decide to draw it. While he had not taken much with him, he did in fact grab a small bag that had pencils and sketchbooks in it. He could already imagine sketching this goofy boy provoking a polar-bear-dog or whatever other crazy thing he would do.

Alice didn't want to admit that he didn't exactly explore the city, and so instead he decided to take the cheap way out.
"well... why don't we find out? Ba Sing Se is huge... we're all pretty sure it changes every day so you never find the same building twice... something like that anyways." he had forgotten who had described the city like that, but it was definitely huge given that its walls were big enough to appear on world maps as if they were geographical features.

But, perhaps it'd be for the better, for them to find out together. Both of them could do with a bit of nudging out of their respective doors to see the world and all it had to offer...

Lukka Kaskae

Lukka didn't seem to notice that his new friend was a complete noob to Ba Sing Se as well, but rather welcomed the idea of an adventure. "Sounds awesome!" He grinned, fallowing Alice out into the sunshine, now noticeably cooler in his new clothes, "Lead on, Al!" He really didn't care where they started, so long as eventually there would be food involved. All Lukka really wanted to do was see the city and hang out with his new buddy.

He had actually left most of his possessions behind at the Tailors' shop, just for the ease of walking around (thankfully he remembered his coin pouch, at least). Following Alice was fairly easy, even considering the other boy's height and the amount of pedestrian traffic in Ba Sing Se's Middle Ring. Lukka just had to be careful that he didn't gaze around for too long and lose sight of the other teen.

"How long have you lived here?" He did ask Alice curiously, as they headed out, "Long enough to get a job and stuff, obviously."

Alice was actually attentive to detail, and had noticed that his new, and perhaps slightly overly eager friend had left his things at the tailor shop. Then again, Alice did need to go back here when they were done for the day... well, becuase he wanted to. This was pretty much where he lived after all anyways.

"alright!" he chuckled, not really knowing which way to go, so he just kind of wandered down streets, turning at random intervals. He might not have known his way around, but there were a few choice landmarks that could always get him back to that Tailor Shop.
Alice luckily didn't go terribly fast, and would be fine to stop and wait up. "Me? I've been living here a few years... transferred from the Fire Nation a few years ago... how bout you? been in the tribes the whole time?" It was not meant to be a demeaning question; he just wasn't sure where this friend of his was from or where he'd been.

"Pretty much," Lukka nodded, not offended in the slightest (though his stomach would be growling soon, with all the amazing smells in the air around their street), "My folks are still there, and before I left, both my older brothers and older sister were still hanging around. I think my brother Sitka might be headed to the Southern Tribe soon, though, for some... political thing." He gestured absently, as if he didn't really know or care what his brother was going for.

Something, however, caught his eye, just then. "Hey Al," the older teen pointed at a rather large building, "What's that place?" There seemed to be quite a crowd outside of it. A rather 'nightlife' type crowd, surprisingly, considering that it was still rather early in the afternoon.
