Personality: Pal is usually happily introverted. With people he knows and likes, he’ll talk up a storm but when with people he doesn’t know, or doesn’t like, he tends to go completely quiet to wait and see what they do next. In a group situation Pal is more comfortable as a follower (perhaps a somewhat quietly critical one at times) than as a leader. He inclines to cautious curiosity about the world at large.

Abilities: A really, really weak waterbending talent, not for lack of trying. Very good at carving fiddly bits of bone into interesting and sometimes useful shapes, such as spearheads and arrowheads. Speaking of which he has really good vision, which lends itself well to archery which is something he’s average to slightly-better-than-average at.

Appearance: 5’8 and still teenage-skinny, not at his full weight. He has sharp features, tanned skin, and high cheekbones, grey eyes and black hair usually in a simple braid. Since he’s earned it, he sometimes wears his hair up in a warrior’s knot, but usually it’s just the braid. Because it’s cold in the south pole he wears layers of clothing with the bottommost layer being dark blue trousers and a dark blue longsleeved shirt. Over that go the sealskin trousers and sealskin vest, seal-skin boots, and if it’s really cold, heavy sealskin jacket. He always wears his necklace with the teeth of the first seal he killed because he thinks it’s lucky.

Oldest of four and the only male child, Pal’s parents were thrilled when he manifested his talent for waterbending, but less thrilled as it failed to progress. Though they were very loving and supportive of their son despite that, he knew they were disappointed and it was keenly felt. So Pal threw himself into all the other normal pursuits of a teenage member of the water tribe- mainly completing the rites of passage, killing his first seal etc. He loves his family very much and patiently puts up with three younger sisters (Piaka, Pakoda, and Pira) who follow his every action with avid interest. They sometimes rebraid his hair for him with disastrous results. Recently Pira has started to show a waterbending talent of her own, which is a little depressing for Pal at times because she seems to be a better waterbender at 3 than he is at 16.

Pal took a deep breath and focused on the lightly packed snow in front of him. Just as he’d been taught, he took his index finger and drew a box in the snow, dragging his finger through snow all the way up to his second finger joint. Now if he concentrated very, very hard, the water beneath his finger, specifically the box of snow that he’d separated from the rest would…He shut his eyes. Work… just work… he thought determinedly, not daring to look for a long moment. Finally he couldn’t take the suspense any more and had to know- was it a success or a failure? He opened his eyes and grinned. The box of snow was now a little box of ice. “Hah!” he muttered. “Did you see that, Pira?”
Pira had been contentedly building a mountain of loose snow. “It a tower!” she informed him.
“I made you a block,” Pal explained, handing it to her. “See? I bent the water from snow to ice and now it’s a solid block.”
Pira took it and turned it over in her tiny hands. “Ice!”
Pal’s second attempt was a little quicker than the first and had Pira’s undivided attention. She giggled happily when he handed her the second brick. “You could make a tower out of them too, right?” he suggested.
In reply, she traced a slightly more wobbily box in the loose snow and scrunched up her face in a look of deep concentration. Pal watched as she bent the snow to ice for herself and handed the piece of ice to him with a delighted grin.
“Good job!” Pal said encouragingly, but inwardly his heart sank. It had been effortless for Pira, a simple trick. And now that she’d figured it out, she was repeating it over and over again, making her own blocks for her tower.
