Tarek Raiden	*6 months ago –* Tarek took a deep breath as squeezed through a tiny opening in a ruined Earth Kingdom wall. The small town he was in was long abandoned, but was once used as a stop-over location for travellers making their way to Ba Sing Se. As was his habit, Tarek made his way to the largest and most well preserved building to start his search for anything of value. Tarek concluded, as he walked into a massive old ruin, that the building must have been the town’s post office. The room was completely empty except for a few broken shelves and desks, anything of value appeared to have already been looted or scavenged. Tarek was determined not to give up though; he was determined to at least find one item of value. After all, this was where many ancient Earth Kingdom documents came through on their way to the great Ba Sing Se. Tarek stepped forward to investigate further when he felt the wooden floor beneath became hollow. “What’s this?” he thought to himself as he stooped down to get a closer look. “There must be a hidden basement down there,” he said out loud as if talking to another person, “let’s have a look.” He twirled his spear around and wedged the end into a gap between two of the floorboards. He then reached for the other end of the spear and pulled. The floor boards pulled apart leaving a small opening through which he was able to squeeze into. Tarek fell into a dark and stuffy room. He made a quick hand gesture and a small burst of flame erupted from his palm, providing Tarek with some much needed light. The room was full of parchments and scrolls. Some were letters, others were maps, and some were very official Earth Kingdom documents. There were even a few earthbending scrolls among them. Tarek was overjoyed with his find and grabbed as much as he could. He carefully rolled them up and placed them in his pack. Suddenly he stopped as he caught a glimpse of a large map mounted on the wall. Tarek brought his flame closer and squinted to get a good look. The map was extraordinarily well drawn and exceedingly well detailed, except for one thing, Ba Sing Se was missing. This greatly confused Tarek, who was squinting even more and adding a little extra juice to his flame for some more light. The map clearly said “Ba Sing Se” in large symbols, but there were no walls and no buildings, like on all the other maps he has seen in the past. Tarek stepped back and stood perfectly still for a moment, as if he was in deep thought. Before long he snapped himself out of his trance, grabbed the map and the last of the documents and made his way out. As he came to the small opening in the wall which he used to get into the old town, he wondered if anything else he had scavenged would shed some light on this mystery… Present Day- Tarek had finally arrived in the great city of Ba Sing Se. He had always wanted to visit the city, especially the famous Ba Sing Se University, but he was always far out in forgotten places and seldom travelled to any of the great cities. This time however, he arrived with a purpose. His find in the old Earth Kingdom town prompted him to investigate the city of Ba Sing Se. He made some interesting discoveries; chief of these being that Ba Sing Se was once a massive underground city, and that long ago the great walled city of Ba Sing Se was built over the massive underground labyrinth, now known as the Crystal Catacombs. The existence of the Crystal Catacombs is hardly common knowledge to the general population of Ba Sing Se, and very few outsiders are aware of the ancient tunnels. Tarek knew that even those few who know of the Catacombs, rarely venture into them for fear of getting lost or running into one of the criminal groups who have been rumoured to use the tunnels as an escape route from the authorities. Tarek firmly gripped the rolled up parchment in his hand, it was a map of the Catacombs. Until now no one really knew exactly how large or how deep the tunnel network went, and no one had a detailed map of the entire underground city. But Tarek had found one, buried beneath the old abandoned town. It was possibly one of the last in existence, or at least Tarek liked to think so. Tarek smiled and began to whistle a medley of Earth Kingdom tunes while he made his way through the winding streets of the cities lower ring. He had only one thing on his mind, enter the Catacombs and see what mysteries lie within. He knew however, that he couldn’t go alone; He would need at the very least a powerful earthbender. He going into the tunnels without one would be suicide. The streets were bustling with activity around the gate where the lower ring and middle ring met. Tarek stopped his whistling for a moment when his eyes caught a glimpse of a young boy with torn clothes and scabby knees who was sitting quietly on a bench. “Flamio Hotman!” exclaimed Tarek as he gave a small bow to greet the youngster. The boy laughed at Tarek’s silly greeting as he bowed and returned the same greeting. Tarek gave a hearty laugh at the boy’s enthusiasm and with a quick movement and a little slight of hand, he seemingly pulled a gold piece out of the boy’s ear. The boy looked up at Tarek with wide eyes filled with amazement. Tarek smiled as he flicked the coin in the air. “Think you can help me out?” he asked the boy. “Sure Mister!” the boy exclaimed. Tarek pulled out a pack of fliers from his sack and placed them in the boy’s hands, “I need you to put these fliers up in the busiest parts of the city you can think of,” he then pulled out a small pouch from a pocket, “Ten more gold pieces for your most appreciated help.” The boy excitedly took the money. “Thank you Mister, Thank You! I will hang the fliers better than anyone just you watch!” he exclaimed as he bounded through the narrow streets. Tarek looked on for a second and returned to his whistling. The boy posted the fliers everywhere he could think of, some guards attempted to stop him a few times but he would quickly get away from them. The message on the fliers was very neatly written and said: Explorer in need of a group, especially earthbenders, to accompany him into the Crystal Catacombs, anyone who can pull their own weight is welcome to join. Weapons and equipment will not be provided, so be sure to come prepared. Any gold, silver, gems, artifacts, weapons armour or other objects of value will be split evenly with the group, but any scrolls, tomes or documents that are found will be donated to the Ba Sing Se University. Loki	Loki was a sucker for gems and jewels and when she saw the flier that proclaimed she'd get a share of any treasure found, she knew what she had to do. Loki had never been the type for education, so she had never had the luxury of going to the University of Ba Sing Se, even though she lived in the huge city. "First time for everything..." she mumbled to herself, as she headed from the lower ring to the affluent university. Like usual, she used the sail that she tied around her waist to fly. It was much faster than walking through the old and confusing streets of the city. She arrived and descended with as much grace as a stealthy airbender could muster, which was a lot. Eventually she was pointed in the right direction when she asked around for a man named Tarek Raiden. She found the man and stood in front of him awkwardly for a second to make sure it was him. She finally spoke up and said, "Hey, I heard you need a dungeon crawler. I'm not an Earthbender, but I've got experience with lock, traps, and I'm a pretty fighter." She wouldn't have it if this man didn't accept her. She'd prove herself one way or another.

Daichi	As usual, Daichi was training. It so happened that he didn't have a target, so he was scouting Ba Sing Se, looking for small alleyways, or quick entrances to sewers. Basically he was looking for anything that could assist him in his rather dangerous job. And he happened to notice a small flyer, on the side of a wall. The flyer offered entrance to the Crystal Catacombs, and a share of any treasure found, but that wasn't what interested him. Daichi himself knew about the catacombs, as he was taught about it by his father, he even had a few clients that used them. Whilst conversing with these clients he'd noted that the catacombs had many entrances and exits, and they were effectively the perfect tool for a criminal, naturally, knowledge about these catacombs would be a godsend to any assassin. Daichi looked around, too see if anyone was looking, then he did a small fist pump. The assassin then ventured to the university, where he expected to find Tarek, the man who was hosting the trip. He found him with relative ease, and he noticed an airbender descending down to meet him. He recognized the girl, and though he didn't know her name, he was fairly happy too see her, as she'd helped him in the past. He let her talk to him first, then he spoke up. "I'm also here to explore the catacombs, I'm Daichi, an earthbender, and an incredibly experienced fighter. I can also pick locks, and I'm one of the most observant people you'll meet." He turned to Loki "Good to see you again, you may remember me, we saved a bunch of people together." Daichi had changed into his black gear. He didn't have the pouches of earth with him, he figured he wouldn't need them, he did, however have his bow and quiver on his back, his knife on his thigh, and he'd packed lunch and snacks.

Tarek Raiden	Tarek was browsing through the great library of Ba Sing Se University. It was amazing, for a change he could read about the history and secrets of the world without crawling through a ruin. He only wished the old lady who took care of the books wouldn't shush him every time he started whistling. He had just found a book about cooking Earth Kingdom delicacies, when a young woman appeared next to him. She paused for a moment and said, "Hey, I heard you need a dungeon crawler. I'm not an Earthbender, but I've got experience with lock, traps, and I'm a pretty fighter." Tarek smiled as he gave a small bow to the woman. "Always a pleasure to meet one of the airbenders, I shall be honored to have you join." Tarek turned to see a man approach. "I'm also here to explore the catacombs, I'm Daichi, an earthbender, and an incredibly experienced fighter. I can also pick locks, and I'm one of the most observant people you'll meet." The man then proceeded to greet the young women. Tarek smiled and bowed. "Yes of course, you are welcome to join." Tarek looked at the two people before him for a moment and said, "My name is Tarek, as you both no doubt already know, may I ask your names?"

Loki	Loki smiled at Daichi and said, "Oh yeah! Stuff like that tends to linger." She smirked and realized they'd have a pretty experienced earthbender, which was probably necessary. Looking up as Tarek asked their names, she said to both of them, "I'm Loki, and I'm pretty excited." She could just imagine all the treasure and jewels, and as greedy as Loki was, she was loyal, and she guessed they'd go through enough in these caverns to warrant Loki's loyalty. She'd most likely split the profits like she should. But she'd definitely call dibs on the best stuff.

Daichi	Daichi also introduced himself, with a cold, but not unkind glare. "I'm Daichi, and i'm just here for the trip, that being said, don't count me out on any treasure." Daichi wasn't as loyal, but he doubted he'd betray any of the two, as he believe they'd prove themselves to be quite a help to him. "Also." He started to unzip his backpack, and from it he brought a large paper bag. "I brought snacks, if anyone needs them." This measure wasn't as nice as it seemed, in fact. It was purely pragmatic, Daichi didn't want a single person falling behind out of hunger. He'd love to just leave them if that happened, but he his new-found conscience wouldn't allow it.

Tarek Raiden	Tarek could help but smile at the young airbenders enthusiasm, and the smile grew even larger as he saw Daichi pull out the bag of snacks. "A pleasure to meet you both," he said in reply to their greetings. He then pointed at Daichi's snacks, "As long as they're not from the water tribe, they will be much appreciated," he chuckled. Tarek started gathering his things, "We'd best get started," he said as gripped his spear in his left hand and gestured toward the door. "I will take us to a nearby entrance," he continued as he took a stride forward. Tarek paused to tell a passing library clerk to redirect anyone who came looking for him. "I hope you two don't mind getting a little dirty," he said as he once again bounded for the door," the closest entrance to the Catacombs is in the sewer, and we will need Daichi's earthbending to get in." Tarek normally walked fast, but today he was walking slightly faster then usual. Only stopping to quickly cross check his map with his surroundings. He didn't even check to see if Loki or Daichi were still following him, few things excited him like the prospect of discovering long lost ancient secrets. Tarek suddenly stopped, "this is it," he said, "the entrance." He had stopped in a dirty alleyway. The walls of large buildings flanked him on either side. They were covered in strange markings. On the ground a few feet ahead of him he could see the sewer entrance which was sealed and locked with earthbending. "Some of the old tunnels were converted into sewers," he said assuming that Daichi and Loki were behind him, "the rest were closed up and abandoned, although earthbenders could get in and out pretty easily." Tarek ran his fingers over one of the markings, he wondered if they were some kind of symbols used by criminals to reveal secret entrances into the Catacombs. Tarek pulled himself from his thoughts, "We'll need you to open this Daichi." he said as he pointed to the entrance and turned around.

Loki	Loki road on an air current to keep up with Tarek and after a bit of a "walk" they had reached the entrance. Loki landed on her feet and stood there waiting for Daichi to open the sewer, wondering what kinds of treasure could lie inside.

Daichi	"I will take us to a nearby entrance" Daichi perked up at that. He put his bag onto his back, and followed Tarek, eager to find out what awaited him. "I hope you two don't mind getting a little dirty. The closest entrance to the catacombs is in the sewer, and we will need Daichi's earthbending to get in." He didn't mind one bit. In fact, Daichi was relieved that the entrance was so hidden, and that it needed earthbending to open. Eventually, they reached the entrance, which was inscribed with strange markings. Tarek revealed some tunnels were converted to sewers, where as others were simply closed off. Daichi was relieved to know that the closed ones could still be accessed by earthbenders. All of a sudden, it came flooding back to him, he'd heard of these symbols before, his clients had mentioned them when they talked. From what Daichi could remember, they marked the different entrances to the tunnels, the assassin neglected to mention this, he loathed the idea of archaeologists crawling around this gold mine of an escape system. "We'll need you to open this Daichi." He turned, and saw Tarek pointing at the entrance. Daichi paused for a moment, and stopped inspecting the symbols, he approached the entrance, and drew himself up. The entrance itself was guarded by metal bars, something Daichi could not bypass. The tunnel itself, however was made of earth, so Daichi merely destroyed some of it's side. It was a crude entrance, but one all the same. He shrugged "I have yet to learn metalbending."

Tarek Raiden	Tarek looked at the hole had just made, “Resourceful,” he said looking at Daichi, “strange that the map never mentioned the metal bars, ” he continued holding his head as if he was deep in thought. Tarek didn’t say anything, but the markings and the metal bars, greatly disturbed Tarek. He concluded that the criminal groups, who made use of the tunnels, were dug in deeper than he assumed. He wasn’t concerned for the safety of his party, but he was worried about how much the gangs had discovered and what they had destroyed. Tarek motioned for Daichi and Loki to follow as he lowered his head to take a look into the tunnels; he spotted a dry landing place and jumped in. The tunnel was long and dark, and for a second Tarek couldn’t even see his hand in front of him. His eyes quickly adjusted, and he pulled out two torches from his pack. He held them in his left and made a sweeping motion with his right, his eyes started to glow a feint orange and the torches were instantly lit. “This way,” he said to Daichi and Loki as he passed them the two torches, “and keep an eye out, these tunnels are not as empty as they seem.” Tarek had just barely finished talking, when a loud crashing sound echoed down the tunnel.

Loki	Loki really was just along for the ride so far. She knew nothing helpful about Earth Kingdom history, and she didn't have the ability to make a tunnel into a tunnel with earthbending. She didn't mind that she was useless so far, as she was sure she'd still get something out of this. She hopped down the tunnel along with the others. Flying instead of walking in the dirty sewer, she relaxed while the others walked. She accepted the torch that Tarek, who revealed himself to be a firebender, handed her. A crashing of some sort echoed through the tunnel and Loki said loud enough to be heard, "Maybe it's the water from the sewer?" but she seriously doubted it.

Daichi	Daichi waved the torch away, noting that Tarek was a firebender, he had a feeling he was going to need both of his hands, and he preferred the dark anyway. "These tunnels are not as empty as they seem." Stated the firebender, and how right he was. On cue, a crashing sound split the tunnel's silence. Daichi moved to the front of the pack. "I know of several crimal gangs dug in here, so i'll take the front, if you don't mind. That way I may be able to negotiate with them."

Tarek Raiden	"Maybe it's the water from the sewer?" said Loki as the sound echoed through the tunnels. Tarek looked up the airbender floating gracefully above the sludge, “Whatever it is, it is directly in our intended path,” he said turning back towards darkness, “and we will find out soon enough.” Daichi had now moved forward, "I know of several criminal gangs dug in here, so i'll take the front, if you don't mind. That way I may be able to negotiate with them." Tarek gave Daichi a nod of approval and let him take the lead. Then Tarek spotted a feint glow near his feet, he reached down and pulled out a small green-blue crystal, probably left over from when they cleared out the sewer tunnels. “Here,” he said handing the crystal to Loki, “The tunnels were once filled with crystals like these. The earthbenders of old used them for light.” Tarek looked as is if he was in deep thought for a moment, but quickly snapped out of it and turned to Daichi, “We will stay far enough back so that we don’t surprise anyone with our numbers, but close enough to aid you if things go south.”

Loki	Loki wasn't too worried about any criminal gangs and remained in her relaxed position. She was observing her nails when Tarek offered her a glowing jewel. Loki's eyes went wide and her mouth immediately popped open. She grabbed it greedily and said, "Oh hell, that's pretty! How much more do you think there is?" Incredibly pleased with her decision to come along, Loki smiled as she observed all sides of the gem. It glowed with a brilliant light, and while Loki would not wear it while she was thieving, she'd be sure to wear it at any other occasion. She'd have to get it chained somewhere. Loki imagined herself wearing it at all sorts of places, completely forgetting about the incoming sound.

Daichi	The assassin nodded at Tarek's suggestion. "I'm not going to lie, if we meet one of the gangs, it's probably going to go south. I'm only acquainted with one gang, and even they don't like me. As I mentioned earlier, there're many gangs roaming these tunnels, and none of them're friendly." Daichi began to move forward, focused on what was ahead, all the while the crashing was moving closer, he felt the earth between his hands, at his fingertips, and flowing through his body. Needless to say, Daichi was ready, but for what?

Tarek Raiden	Daichi started walking off into the tunnels, and Tarek and Loki stayed back for a few moments. Tarek used this time to answer Loki’s earlier question. “Many, many more,” he said with a smile as he looked up the excited airbender, “many more larger and more colourful ones than that one too.” Tarek took a quick look down the tunnel and noticed that Daichi was now out of sight and the splashing sounds were coming closer, “We better get after him slowly and…” Tarek paused, he was going to say quietly, but realised that Loki hardly made a sound as she glided through air. Tarek started moving forward, squinting into the distance. Suddenly, Tarek stopped, he felt something. He closed his eyes and focused his energy down the tunnel. “Fire,” he whispered with his eyes still closed, “whoever is coming down this tunnel is carrying lit torches.” Tarek’s closed his eyes tighter as if he was concentrating more, “three, maybe four of them.” Tarek opened his eyes and turned to Loki, “If they attack Daichi do you think you could use your airbending to put out their torches?” he asked with a wry grin on his face. Deeper down the tunnel, three men were running to investigate the crash they heard earlier. All three were very large, clad in sturdy metal armor. They each wielded crystal longswords which glitter ever so slightly in the dark. They were not normal bandits or thugs; these were specially trained and highly paid Catacomb guards, used by the heads of the gangs to guard the secret entrances of the Catacombs. The men suddenly stopped and raised their swords and torches into an attack position. The biggest of the three men stepped forward, raised his torch and peered into the dark where he thought he spotted something. “Hey!” he shouted in a commanding voice, “I see you there, make yourself known and you will be spared.” He was bluffing of course, he wasn’t even sure if anyone was there but he hoped his little act would draw them out.

Loki	Loki's eyes went pretty wide in excitement as Tarek described how there were more jewels that were even larger and more colorful than the pretty glowing one they had just found. It almost made her a bit disappointed with what she had, but she thought since it was the first one, it still had a bit of character. Loki nodded at Tarek's instructions, ready to blow out the light of any threat. She remembered Daichi saying he wasn't friendly with any gang, so that basically made every person down here a threat. After stuffing the glowing rock in the sail around her waist, in order to remain hidden in the dark, Loki heard a man shout at Daichi to make himself known in order to be spared. That sounded pretty threatening. Loki shot a blast of air down the tunnel, the enclosed space making sure none of her power was lost to the atmosphere. She wasn't a very powerful bender, but it was enough to snuff the torches. She floated over to one of the guards and said a few feet away from him, "Your swords are a bit stupid down here. Now I can see your weapon..." Loki took a dagger off her leg, stabbed the rightmost guard in the neck, and said, "but you can't see mine."

Daichi	As soon as he saw the man, Daichi drew his bow. They don't seem like the guys I worked with, looks like there won't be any negotiation. The assassin loosed an arrow, and it flew straight into the left guard's forehead, Daichi smiled, he was always a good shot. Suddenly, he felt a gust of wind, and Loki flew by, he guessed Loki would kill or severely injure the next guard herself, so he focused on the middle one. Daichi dropped his bow, punched the guard, and swept him off his feet, using his leg. When the guard hit the ground, Daichi swiftly crouched, and slammed his open palm over the guard's neck, choking him. "You will tell me how many other guards there are, and where they are. You have five seconds."

Tarek Raiden	The guard Daichi had grabbed looked up at him with a cold stare, “I won’t talk!” he shouted in a defiant voice, “I fear Zolin more than I fear you assassin!” Suddenly the walls, roof and floor of the tunnel around Daichi and his captive erupted into bright red and orange flames, which let out a loud roar as they ignited. The guards face filled with surprise and fear, “Y-y-you still won’t get anything from me,” the guard stuttered. Suddenly the flames flared and grew larger and massive cracks of thunder and blinding flashes of lighting filled the tunnels. The guard shouted in despair, “There are no more of us here! The only others guards are posted nearby the other entrances! We have to be spread extremely thin because of the sheer size of this place!” The guard hardly stopped to take a breath, “Z-z-zolin, he is in the center chamber of the catacombs with his elite guards, they’re trying to find a tunnel that leads to the Royal Palace!” The flames got smaller and soon vanished into nothingness. Tarek stepped forward out of the dark, a little out of breath, and with his eyes still glowing orange somewhat, “much appreciated,” he said to the terrified guard as he took a moment to glance at Loki and Daichi’s impressive handiwork. “See if he has a map on him,” he said as he turned back to Daichi.

Loki	Loki suddenly felt incredibly weak compared to the ridiculous force of Tarek. While the captive had been thoroughly frightened into giving information, Loki had too was startled by the bright flames and crackling lightning around the tunnel. The man gave out his information pretty quickly, but Loki realized he'd had nothing to lose. I mean, why would they let him go, he'd just tell the others, and they'd have a mess on their hands. He was dead either way. But fear made it very hard to think logically like that. Loki waited for Daichi to search the man, wondering who this Zolin guy was, and what was so fearsome about him. Daichi	The display of power didn't frighten Daichi, he noticed it, but he was too focused on the information to care. Although, he was fairly impressed. Tunnel that leads to the royal palce! Oh, this is just too good. But there was something else that bothered Daichi, Zolin. He swore that he'd heard that name before. The assassin, managed to find a map, and he chucked it to Tarek. After deciding the man would probably be of little use, Daichi carefully slit his throat. He proceeded to check the other bodies, and he managed to find two other maps, one of which he handed to Loki, and another he pocketed himself.

Tarek Raiden	Tarek bent over with his hand on his knees catching his breath. Loki turned to him and said, "That was a neat trick." Tarek smiled and looked up at her, “you too,” he said as he caught a glimpse of the extinguished torches and the dead guard at her feet. Tarek knew that over-exerting himself underground without direct access to the sun would tire him out, but they needed the guard’s information and he acted almost instinctively. Tarek stretched back and took a deep breath as Daichi passed him a map. Tarek quickly started comparing his map and the one from the guard. He held the two maps up in the air, “the central chamber, that is our goal,” he said still studying every detail of the two maps. “Here!” Tarek exclaimed as he rubbed his hand against the sewer wall, “there is another tunnel running perpendicular to this one through this wall. It leads to an overlook of the main chamber.” Tarek moved aside and gave a nod to Daichi, his thoughts turned to Zolin, and how the guard could be more frightened of him then of death itself, but these thoughts would have to wait, they had a tunnel to break through.

Daichi	Daichi picked up his bow, slung it over his back, and nodded. He then proceeded to place both his hands on the tunnel wall. A few seconds passed, and Daichi found the other tunnel through the wall "Got it." The wall practically exploded, and a large crash could be heard, as a good potion of the wall crumbled, the assassin dusted himself off. "I apologise, the wall is incredibly strong, and I had to attack it's weak points, which almost caused half the tunnel to come crashing down on us."

Loki	Daichi proceeded to open the tunnel and then tell them how their lives were just in danger. "Well that's a lovely picture. Thanks for telling us." Loki said, now wondering at what point in time the tunnel would collapse. Daichi had said that the tunnel had almost collapsed, but now Loki was pretty sure it would. She didn't make it known though.

Tarek Raiden	Tarek was relieved that Daichi broke down the wall without killing them all, although he wished that Daichi could have left the 'tunnels collapsing' part out. As the dust settled a feint glow could be seen inside of the tunnels, Tarek moved closer for a better look. Before him was a large and very long tunnel, but it looked like it was created by master earthbenders, the walls had strange indentations on and many different Earth Kingdom symbols. The whole tunnel was lit by large crystals protruding out of the walls, perfectly level and at equal distances from each other. “This is it,” said Tarek excitedly, “the way to the main chamber!” Tarek quickly got out a piece of parchment and some coal, and started making rubbings of the walls.
