Rafe always had a sharp mind he could grasp and contemplate every lesson posed to him by his teachers at the temple. This allowed him to easily understand the air nomads philosophy. However an arrant mind will also start to pick out flaws in said philosophies and thus Rafe began to search for his own truth at an early age leading him away from the theistic teachings of the elders.
Rafes prodigious success at airbending did help to inflate his pride. He was quick to showcase new varied uses of basic skills. He was quick to answer challenges from the others, this is of course where many of his problems within the temple began. He didn't believe in remaining cloistered within the temples and passively observing the word.
History had proved to him, at least in his eyes, that because the nomads were so secluded when the fire nation attacked they were almost wiped out. Then the entire fate of the order was rested on a young boy who had run away the night before. Maybe if they had allies things wouldn't have been so dire.
When challenged on his views Rafe usually argued that remaining uninvolved with the world at large leaves them stagnant and that growth requires more than meditation and wise council. That said he is often known to slip away from the temple for long periods of time without warning.
Abilities: (210)
Airbending came to Rafe as naturally as breathing. Every form he was shown and taught he learned to execute ahead of his class almost every time. Naturally nothing was perfect but he had a generous grasp of what he was doing and could improve without close tutelage. When he finally perfected the basics he began to toy with ways to alter them. "Learning and mastering only a standard move will only lead to defeat." with this thought he would always adapt and change the execution of the technique in order to remain fluid and unpredictable. However he also knew that using airbending alone wasn't going to be enough and he began to study and train in conventional martial arts. incorporating airbending into his studies he learned to change and adapt even more and soon began to spar against his friends to perfect his new skills.
Aside from his martial training Rafe studied the use of his glider as well. Nothing was quite like flying to him and he made frequent visits to the cities of the firenation for festivals and other cultural celebrations always liking to keep up to date and any news, These trips were often very lengthy and happened without any prior warning. Much the chagrin of the elder monks trying to teach him to be passive and calm.

Rafe strikes a lean lanky figure. A young but serious face rests beneath his shaggy black hair framing his sharp eyes. Rafe had always been of lean build but that didn't mean he was weak. Rafe trained and exorcized in order to increase his physical strength without sacrificing his agility. a constant regiment of aerobic and flexibility exorcized by running alone the temples inverted courtyards and hanging walkways allowed him to shape his body for speed and strength.
Instead of typical robes like the other monks Rafe prefers to wear a pair of short legged pants. A flexible but sturdy pair of sandals covered his feet and a mesh shirt with a small piece of armor on his shoulder that he bartered for from an old relic ship, were all he needed in the warm climates of the fire nation.
Because of his issues with the air nomads philosophies and his frequent travels, Rafe, despite his skill at air bending left the temple grounds before earning his air bending tattoos. However he shrugs this off since they were a dead giveaway about his skills. Rafe found his would be assailants and challengers were always so comically surprised when they were suddenly knocked off their feet with sudden hurricane force winds.

History: (520)
As a young boy Rafe learned along with his friends. Everyone being taught by the same elder. He learned and mastered the many sports and games of the temple. As they learned they also formed and nurtured their young friendships creating the peaceful bonds that were the foundation of the temples later teachings.
As a he matured Rafe began to study more seriously sometime in private sessions with the elder monks. This however was the beginning of a downward slide that would ultimately drive Rafe away from the temple and his friends. The elders were falling into their old ways of seclusion and meditation. Rafe deeply disagreed with this ideal and decided that he would take it upon himself to prove he was right. His pride would not allow him to simply let the argument drop.
And so in his late teens despite his skill as an air bender and his sharp mind, Rafe watched as his peers each received their tattoos and become teachers in their own right while he was still excluded from the rights and passages of his people.
Rafe shrugged this off by traveling more and learning what he could through interacting with the world rather than meditation on philosophy and estranged rumors.
His lengthy travels often took him over the oceans and even the norther and southern water tribes if he could find warm enough clothes but he mostly stayed close to the western air temple, close to home.
Many of Rafes travels involved simply absorbing and observing the culture of the separate nations. Part of his studies when he was younger covered the teaching of a monk gyatso (sp) who claimed that no matter how separate the nations seemed everything was connected. Rafe could see this in many ways. Outside of the main cities he saw many people living happy lives who were from separate nations.
This wasn't to say his travels were all academic sometimes he simply wandered off to spite the monks and get away from everything spending months wandering the earth kingdom or mingling in the markets of the fire nations capital while catching up on current events. Ever confident and Eager to show off Rafe entered fighting tournaments held in both the fire nation and earth kingdom making a name for himself in both circuits but never pursuing a professional career. It was all in fun to him and he didn't need to be rich. He simply enjoyed fighting for sport. Only rarely was he actually required to defend himself seriously while traveling. Tired of flying he'd simply travel on foot and see more of the world, however his meager clothes didn't and belonging didn't dissuade all the bandits in the world and while they attempted to extort money he didn't have Rafe calmly convince them that their chosen profession was ill advised, sometimes by giving their leaders a swift lesson in flight. Though well traveled and worldly experienced Rafe never neglects to share his stories when he gets back to the western air temple usually saving the bandit stories for the youngest generation of monks who find them the most entertaining.
