Umi Yorokobi ~ Sora Chinmoku

Umi is a kind, soft spoken fourteen year old girl who is very protective of her friend Sora. She doesn’t really like people in general, and she’s always careful and noticing her surroundings. This is due to her being a runaway, as the general authorities are still on the prowl for her and she doesn’t exactly want to get caught. While she doesn’t really trust or like anyone, she’s a very friendly and talkative girl when you first meet her. She might mentally think the worst of you, but she will always be sweet and cheerful to your face.
Sora is silent and wide-eyed, always with a sweet expression on her face. She views Umi as her caregiver and protector, and happily joins in on all of Umi’s adventures. Because she doesn’t speak, she is a very good listener, which helps because Umi really likes to talk. She does know a form of sign language that she and Umi made up together, which helps the flow of conversation immensely.

Umi is an intermediate in the study of hand-to-hand combat, and a beginner when it comes to daggers. She only knows what she does of hand-to-hand due to her past, and came across a nonbenders scroll at one point—with emphasis on the dagger. Umi stole one from a vendor in Ba Sing Se days later. Other than this, she’s very much a silvertongue and a wonderful actress; this helps her get her way with new people quite often. She also knows her own form of sign language, which she uses to communicate with Sora.
Sora is a beginner in most things of life; sheltered and naïve, she truly relies upon Umi for everything. She knows very little of hand-to-hand, as most of it she has learned from Umi. They both are in desperate need of a teacher, but neither wants to risk someone recognizing them and sending them to the authorities.


Umi is a pretty young teen; her hair is chocolate in color, as are her eyes. They are large and round, and she has a mouse-like nose. Her mouth isn’t really noticeable. Her hair is long and chocolate colored, and she styles it in a mixture of Water Tribe and Air Temple style. She has an old jacket of her grandfathers, a grey color with white fur trim and a few patches on one of the sleeves. It didn’t fit her at first, but she sent it to a tailor and had it resized just for her. It is the only memoir she keeps from home. Other than this, she can usually be seen in a normal pair of jeans. When she’s in colder climates, she’ll wear a pair of wool leggings under said jeans.

Sora is fairly attractive for a pre-teen; her large eyes are a honey brown color, matching her hair. Her hair is short, only reaching her collarbones, and she usually keeps it tied off on two sides of her face and putting a barrette in her hair to keep her eyes free. The clothing she wears is either hand-me-downs from Umi or clothes that they stole in supermarkets.


Umi was born in the Earth Kingdom to an earth and airbender; both of her parents had been masters, and she grew up happily. She had no brothers and sisters, but when she was eleven, a new girl moved in across the street. This was little Sora, who was eight years old at the time. The girls, despite the slight age difference, bonded immediately and Umi was never seen without her honey-headed companion.
When Umi was twelve, her parents became strange. They watched Umi as she played and worked around the house, sometimes just staring for hours on end. When she reached thirteen, they threw their hands in the air and gave up. A fight ensued between her perfect family, her father accusing her mother of being unfaithful and that was why Umi was a “dud”.
Weeks of the fighting continued, and a particular heated argument in which Umi was screaming at both of her parents to stop with tears streaming down her face is stuck in her mind. She ran from the living room into her bedroom, hastily packed a few clothes and her grandfather’s jacket, and left through the window of their Middle Ring home of Ba Sing Se.
She immediately ran to Sora, who joined in. The two have been on their own for almost two years now.

Sora was born in the Fire Nation as a premature baby. Unlike Umi, Sora’s parents were nonbenders and were quite alright when they found that their child was not a bender. No, Sora’s strife came from the fact that she had been born with disfigured vocal cords; she can attempt speech, but most of the sound she makes is like nails on a chalkboard—the only person to have ever heard her try to speak is Umi.
By merely looking at Sora, you wouldn’t know of her disability; she looks just as an eleven year old ought to. When she was eight years old, she and her family moved to Ba Sing Se and Umi became her friend. When Umi found out about her “handicap”, she didn’t run away like a lot of other kids. When school started, she was made fun of for always being so quiet; even her teachers turned a blind eye to the bullying.
This was when Umi and Sora came up with their own form of sign language, and taught the basic signs to their friends and teachers. This made Sora’s life much easier, and she believes that she is forever in Umi’s debt for this.
When Umi showed up with a bag of clothes and crying, Sora grabbed some clothes as well and left along with her. There was no way Sora was going to live her life with everyone pretending she just didn’t exist; she wasn’t going to live her life with no one to communicate with. While she sometimes feels guilty for leaving her parents, she writes them a letter every night and keeps the letters at all times, tied together with a pink ribbon.
