Stranger in the Night [Maranzano]

Obsidian	The scene at Minato’s drug warehouse was grim. A myriad of Minato’s best men, all ex-shadows and veterans from the war, lay scattered across the floor…bruised, broken and in excruciating pain. They had been paid a visit from the Zulera City Vigilante…Obsidian. Obsidian had done his part and let the authorities know of the warehouse’s location via radio. They could handle the clean-up. For now Obsidian headed home, it had been a long night. When he arrived at his safe house, he immediately realised something wasn’t right. Whenever he left the apartment he would use metalbending to pull a small almost unnoticeable metallic cube against the door. Today however, he could sense that the metallic cube had been pushed away. Someone other than him had opened the door to his apartment. The man of metal slowly opened the door and peeked inside. It was dark and no one was waiting in ambush for him. He stepped in and quietly closed the door behind him. Perhaps whoever was here had already left, or perhaps they were still hiding somewhere in the apartment. “Who are you?” he asked, his eyes scanning the room, “What do you want? I was not expecting guests...”

Salvatore Maranzano	"I'm in the dining room, and I pose no threat to you. I just want to talk to Zulera City's number one." Zano said from the next room. He had been waiting silently and patiently for some hours, slipping into his apartment after he had left. He had a message for the vigilante, and a proposition. His officers, namely Surrake and Li, were nearby, but they weren't in the room at the moment. Zano wanted to keep his word, and not pose a threat.

Obsidian	Obsidian walked slowly into the next room. His lumbering silhouette would have looked quite menacing in the dark with only a sliver of moonlight illuminating the room with an eerie glow. Obsidian carefully examined the man who now sat in his dining room. He didn’t recognize him and saw no signs of hostility at all. Perhaps this man did not pose a threat after all, but Obsidian wasn’t going to let his guard down just yet. “You have me at a disadvantage,” said Obsidian from the shadows, “you know about me, what I do, where I live…but I know nothing about you. So tell me...who are you and what do you want?”

Salvatore Maranzano	Zano folded his fingers together, still leaning forward on the table. "I'm going to be straight with you. No lies. I am Salvatore Maranzano, CEO of Cabbage Corp and a boss of my, well, less than legal operations." He stared right at Obsidian in the dim light. He wouldn't say, but he was a little intimidated by the scene. It's not like Surrake and Li couldn't get him out safely if needed, but still. "The reason I am here is to offer you two things. The explanation of why I do things, and information on all the other mob and mafia leaders in the City." He produced a large envelope, and pulled several pictures and sketches of three women. All of them were taken of them on the street, doing various things. He named the women as he did so. "Robin Miyamoto, Maya "The Scarlet Blade" or "The Oracle", and Tamiyo Sawamatsu." He looked back at Obsidian after laying them all out. "Do you wish to hear what I have come to say?" He leaned back in his chair, tilting his head slightly.

Obsidian	Obsidian tilted his head ever so slightly as the man spoke. “Salvatore Maranzano?” said Obsidian with a hint of surprise in his voice, “As I understand you are a very difficult man to find,” he continued as he stepped closer to get a better look at Maranzano’s face. “Yet here you found me…quite a risk wouldn’t you say? Considering who I am and what I do?” Obsidian honestly didn’t know what to do. Here sat the elusive Crime Lord Maranzano himself, on a golden platter. Obsidian could save a lot of future trouble and just capture the man now. However, Maranzano’s offer was just as tempting…information on the other Crime Lords could give Obsidian a definite advantage, and his explanation of why he was doing what he did was bound to be interesting to say the least. “Very well, I will hear you out.” He said as he stood motionless, staring straight into Salvatore’s eyes.

Salvatore Maranzano	"And with my offer, It is well worth to put myself at such high risk for what I can gain." He explained to Obsidion. "Now, Before my conditions of the information, I want to tell you why I do things." He cleared his throat, and leaned forward onto the table. "I do not wish to see war. On the streets or the battlefield. I have had my men destroy weapon prototypes, abduct black market weapon sellers, clean up drug labs. All in every nation, except Air Temples, those things are almost spot clean. I have even arranged for a police force to be open soon in Zulera City, under the principle that Police and Vigilantes work towards the same goal." He paused for a moment. "Now, would you like to hear the conditions that I have for the information that will follow?"

Obsidian	Obsidian remained motionless as Maranzano spoke. He took special note of the man’s posture, gestures and tone of voice as he spoke and carefully studied his dimly lit face, taking in as much as he could about the notoriously elusive Crime Lord. “A man who lusts after the cruel mistress that is war, has never lay a night with her in her harsh and icy embrace.” Began Obsidian in response to Maranzano, “but do not expect me to believe that you are some saint, you mentioned your illegal activities but a few moments ago. Maya, Robin, Minato and Tamiyo would all destroy weapon prototypes, abduct black market weapon sellers and clean up drug labs if they were not their own.” Obsidian paused considering the rest of Maranzano’s words carefully. “Speak your terms, but know that I am very skeptical of a crime lord starting up a police force, although I am curious into what role you seek me to play in this scheme of yours.”

Salvatore Maranzano	"You make a point," He began. "And you're right. I'm not a saint." "My terms are, that you refrain from attacking my people under me, or my business. Until the others are gone and off the streets, of course. In return, I have schedules, patterns of the day, how they operate, and the names of all their contacts. Took my a while to get this information. Do you accept? " He held out his hand, for a hand shake.

Obsidian	Obsidian folded his arms as Maranzano spoke. “Let me get this straight, you are offering me information on your own enemies in exchange for my guarantee that I will not interfere with your dealings?” he asked, stepping closer to the man before him. “Let us consider for a moment what you have to gain from this shall we. Firstly, no vigilante interfering with your criminal dealings. Secondly, a personal assassin of sorts to wipe out your enemies without you even having to lift a finger, and thirdly, an entire city handed to you on a silver platter. Now what do I get from all this? I get some extra information on four out five of the city’s Crime Lords, enough perhaps to help me take them down quicker. Leaving you, however, to take over their empires…and leaving me right back where I am now. I do not think it is a very fair offer.”

Salvatore Maranzano	"What is needed for a war to happen? To have civilians caught in the crossfire? What is needed, is more than one groups. Whether their goals align or not isn't the point. But more than one group is needed. When there is only one group, there is a threat of a dictatorship to threaten and oppress the people. But what if this group isn't government, or didn't fondle with politics? They simply ran the streets? One thing would happen. Peace." "The streets will always be dangerous unless they are controlled from within. Police can try their hardest, but something deeper underground will grow. But if something even deeper than that kept pushing the outlaws to the surface, then the streets are safe once more." He concluded. "Once these events come to pass, if something was to come from the depths of the ocean and the earth, and push out this last evil, then nothing more would exist, as all would fear this force who took out the one who had taken out all others." Maranzano leaned back. "Do you understand what I am saying?"

Obsidian	Obsidian heard Maranzano out, he was different from the other Crime Lords. It was almost as if he had similar goals to Obsidian, but another approach. Maranzano’s words were compelling but Obsidian simply didn’t agree on some points. “War...” began Obsidian, “Is inevitable. The very nature of the world is warlike. Light and Dark, Chaos and Order, Good and Evil. I do not try to prevent what I know is inescapable. I face it head on...I only make sure I have chosen the right side.” Obsidian then took a step closer to Maranzano, less cautious of a trap now, and took a seat across from him. “I do believe that you do not want to see war, and I might even believe you have good intentions for this city. However i feel that I should give you a word of warning...You cannot jump into a pit of mud without getting yourself dirty. Just some simple advice, man to man. If you promise to consider it, then I will agree to your deal, as long as you keep your dealings clean. No murder...no drugs...no extortion.”

Salvatore Maranzano	Maranzano held his hand out once more. "Deal. Drug operations will disappear, extortion will no longer be an option, and I'll convince my boys not to leave bodies in the streets and alleyways. You'll get regular updates on Tamiyo, Robin and the others as I receive the info. Expect the first update tomorrow. Anonymously, of course." He smiled a rare smile. Finally things were going right.

Obsidian	Obsidian extended his metal hand as well, and in a sign of goodwill shook hands with Maranzano. He still wasn’t sure about this deal, and honestly considered the fact that he might be betrayed, double crossed or even just become a pawn in some grander scheme, but Obsidian had to take Minato down. That was his first priority, and Maranzano would give him the means, with the added bonus of extra information on the other Crime Lords. Apart from that, Maranzano agreed to keep his dealings clean, even if this deal had only accomplished that, then Obsidian considered it worthwhile. Obsidian gave Maranzano a respectful nod, “You are a smart man, Maranzano and I believe you are a man of your word. Good luck with your police force. Do try to keep them off my back will you.” he said with a slight chuckle.

Salvatore Maranzano	"Don't worry, they won't be a problem for you." Maranzano replied before getting up and putting his coat and hat on, then walked out the front door. ~~~~~ The next day, a vanilla envelope appeared in the alleyway that Obsidian's entrance was located. It seemed like it was just tossed in there, forgotten, but Maranzano knew the vigilante was a smart person. Inside was photographs of Robin and Tamiyo, all at different locations, talking with different people, handing things to people on the streets and business men alike. All of them had ink on them, circles and names scribbled onto them by some very neat and legible hand. There was also a few sheets of paper, two or three for each woman, describing when they went somewhere, how, who with, and if it was a usual route or something odd, out of place. All in all, a lot of info. and this was just the tip of the iceberg.
