Sado

A sudden, soft thump echoed a very short distance in the sand as the vulture-hornet crashed into the dune. A light breeze began lazily burying the deceased creature in sand as Sado marched through the unstable terrain to his prey. He knew better than to touch it. Even in death the tendons and muscles of that magnificent monster's body were tensed and ready to spring at the slightest provocation. Coming about to its back side, he kicked its barbed tail inward towards its belly, setting off its stinging reflex and leaving the corpse with no more energy to attempt to maim its murderer.

He then set his boot next to the entry wound his spear still occupied in the beast's flank, pressing down gently to free the sharpened length of wood and some modest amount of blood. Stabbing the sand viciously, he drew a knife and waterskin and began to operate on the creature's tail, delicately opening its poison sac. He allowed the excess poison to spill out over the tail and the sand, but he was careful not to let it touch the good meat or his hands. Then he set the skin against the hole in the sac and gently squeezed the venom into the sac by pressing down with his weight through his knee. With the deftness of an artist, he scooped the skin away from the wound and tied it off without getting any of the acidic venom on his skin. Then he tied it to his belt and began to field dress the beast's upper half, which was all still good meat. He was fortunate to have found a night bereft of sandstorms. He was growing tired of grinding sand in his food in his mouth.

Taking a bit of the meat and popping it into his mouth, he chewed and savored the warm, wet, juicy quality of fresh meat for a moment while he sat down and looked up at the stars. He kept picking pieces of meat off the carcass as he watched a moonless night sky slowly crawl above him.

"Hmmm. Yes," He said, as if the stars had spoken to him, "But..." he took a bite, chewing calmly, "... you know nothing in the world has changed."

The stars winked back at him knowingly. He nodded with understanding, "So is it time, then?" He asked casually, picking remains of a feather off some meat. The stars twinkled at him merrily and he nodded. "The time has come."

He turned to the oddly smiling vulture and grinned back a flash of brownish teeth barely visible in the dark and began tearing large pounds of flesh from the bone and gorging himself on it until he was completely full. Then he belched a bloody gust of wind and spit some excess vulture blood from his mouth before standing and picking up his spear. The sand had licked the sharp end clean of any blood not soaked into the wood, but he knew that he would not want to kill with that tip again. Instead, he retrieved his knife and began whittling the edge away, leaving a clean surface underneath, which would not become contaminated with time. He followed the stars home. He followed them through the desert. Their light, though faint, cast a long and weary shadow over his path. It was an old friend of his he had not seen in a very long time. Once again it tickled the bottoms of his feet to know that each step brought him that much closer. At the end of his path was a person. Man, woman or child it didn't matter. He had an appointment with them, an arrangement on Fate's part to bring the two to meet. It was like love. You can't escape it. You can't resist it. You can only choose how you will react to it. Sado believed in love at first sight. He also believed in the vow of til death do we part.

So he was glad to see his old love redeemed to him. This shadow, this ghost which haunts and creeps and taunts, urging him to harm, to hurt, to kill, to open up and see what's inside. But now he had grown. Life is too short to waste on pleasures. The world needed fixing and there was too much work that needed to be done.

"Yu Ping," He mumbled to himself, agreeing with the stars and the shadow that was his soul. He would need Yu Ping again. He always knew that he would, but until now he had not known for what purpose.

"A faithful hound, a wild dog. Bite the hand that feeds you... or give him someone else's hand...."

His voice trailed off into the distance ahead of him as he staggered resolutely to the north east.

Meili Mitali Zalika

Earth--it was truly everywhere. From the murky muds of the swamps to the rocky mountains to the sands of the beaches and deserts, it was present in some form. Even in the hostile Si Wong Desert, it existed all around her as sand. Even a place like this felt like home to Zalika Meili. it was relatively cool right now since it was evening, but she had had plenty of water. Thus, her feelings of thirst were only natural by virtue of how dry this place was. It was not an actual need; just that Meili felt she could drink water forever while was within the confined of the Si Wong Desert during the day. at night her thirst was not so demanding, which was always pleasing.

She knew that there were other people--or creatures--out here that were not always friendly, but she was a grown woman and knew how to defend herself. She was a powerful earthbending master with knowledge of metalbending as well. She thought back to why she was here. She had slipped into the storms of the desert to hide; not to run, but those were long since past, and the night was very clear except for a few gusts that carried sand from dune to dune.

Why had she even been hiding anyway? she douln't really remember, because she had not stopped to think about her actions--she had just gone and done. This was not always the best idea, but no matter how many times she tried to drill it through her 41-year-old skull, it never seemed to stick, and Meili found herself making stupid mistakes from time to time again.
She was in no danger though. she still had a bit of water, and she was not too thirsty--just the natural bit of thirst that came from being in such a dry place. It was nigh impossible to feel truly quenched in a hot, dry region this size, even if it was evening. But, no matter.

Meili brought her hands together and stamped her feet into the sand. it solidified below her shoes, which made a clunking noise of rock hitting rock when Meili took a step on this newly formed rock surface. she then thrust one arm forward, and then the other, and soon her platform was moving, and she was gliding across the sand. She had no real destination in mind, but she knew the general directions of how to return to some kind of civilization, from major cities like Ba Sing Se or Gaoling, to smaller trading post-like settlements. right now, she was just heading an a random direction, aiming for some unnamed target that would get her away from the place she had just been.

She kept her eyes open for anything unusual as she glided across the sand, but in the dark, under the light of the moon and stars, all the shadows were little more than large boulders slowly being eaten away at by the sands being blasted against them by the winds, and the occasional cactus plant. Meili's lips curled upwards into a small smirk when she noticed any of these. She had heard the stories and experienced some of her own, regarding their effects.

Her trip was cut short, however, upon noticing the figure of a man--or it might have been a woman, she couldn't tell this far away with the dark and with her vision. She was almost certain it was human. She jumped off of her solidified sand platform and cautiously started making her way towards the figure. She kept her guard up--most desert wanderers were dangerous or hostile. perhaps thinking her plan through a little better might have been wise, but she had neglected that thought yet again. Oh well... it would only be a few moments before one of them noticed each other, and then Meili's theories would be either proved or falsified.

Sado

The shadow before him danced and twisted over the steeply rising and falling dunes, almost cackling in the bends and turns his feet were so used to. But his shadow split itself in twain, one continuing to stretch and shimmer while the other drew itself resolutely from the sands themselves and walked towards him bodily.

'And who would I happen to chance across out here?' He asked himself mentally, wondering if this was the person the stars had lead him to.

No. He knew this one was on his path, but not at the end. The time had not yet come for them to meet death's kiss.

... Unless they wanted to.

Hourglass form. Thick, brick-like stance and gait he knew all too well, and yet there were unique qualities. She, as she surely was a she, tended to bend like a lily in the breeze, despite her flawless mastery of her posture. Built like a brick house and grows like a tiger lily. Hair which curled and tossed in the wind like the sand around it. Truly a remarkable beast, he knew.

He drew closer and closer until he could see by her stance that he was as close as she was comfortable, and then finished with a single step past that line, resting his spear sharp end down in the ground. He waited to see if she would address him first, eyeing her over briefly to take in her shadowed details before turning his eyes upward to see the stars on the horizon behind her.

"Twinkle, twinkle, little star," he mumbled under his breath.

Meili Mitali Zalika

It was definitely a man, now that Meili's subpar eyes could make out a few more details. Even in the clear, moonlit sky it was not likely that they would be able to make out enough of each others' faces--or maybe he could see hers better than she could see his. whatever the case, the details of his face were still hidden. Meili turned her head slightly to the left, so that her right ear--her good ear--could try and hear him if he was saying anything. her ears twitched, but she heard nothing. perhaps he was muttering, or maybe not even saying anything at all. Meili's senses weren't exactly the best.

She heard him mutter something quietly, but she couldn't make out what. based on what little of a tone Meili perceived, it didn't exactly come off as hostile, but there was something unsettling about this man, whatever it was. Now Meili was curious. But, if he would not say the first word, she would.

"Here I am." she said softly but with confidence. The silence of the desert around them save the winds was a silence that Meili did not feel needed to be broken with a loud voice--so her soft tone would do, as she waited to see how this stranger would react to her presence.

"Indeed," he replied, "You are. However, more to the point would be why."

He leaned on his spear as a walking stick, resting both his chin on his hands on the bottom end of the stick.

"The Desert is an odd place to run into strangers."

An interesting fellow, to put it lightly.
"I reckon' I could ask the same of you." she replied, "but to be honest, I don't have much of a reason for being here other than leaving one location and heading to another."

Meili smirked at his other remark. "That would be putting it lightly." she indicated. "It is a place to run. to escape. Few dare venture this deep in--which makes me only somewhat surprised that I would run into someone else here."

Sado

Sado shifted and glanced over his left shoulder, scanning the horizon with a quick sweep of his head around his other shoulder, "Hide?" he asked skeptically, "No. If you wanted to hide you stick to the outer edge of the desert, near civilization. This is where you go to get lost."

He picked his spear out of the ground, turning it in his hand and walking around her to continue on his way.

Meili Mitali Zalika

Meili wasn't exactly known for just saying "okay" and moving on. She was more stubborn than that. However, this didn't need to be turned into an argument.

"precisely." she cooed, "this is where you go to get lost. Those who pursue you then also get lost, meaning you are effectively hidden where no one can find you without getting lost themselves. It is only on scarce chance that people actually meet like this."

When he started walking around and away from her, she made no motion to stop him, and so she soon figured that they would be on their way, unless he had any counter-remarks.

Sado

Sado glanced up at the stars and allowed a whisper of a smile to play there, "I met Chance once," he told her, "She's not so mindless or random as some would have you believe."

Sado was a bit surprised at himself. Normally he was not one for useless chatter, but he felt compelled to go on. He supposed it was words that had accumulated and could not find release over his years in the desert. He hoped this was the case, because it meant that he would vent his vocal frustration quickly and then return to his normal state of mind.

"Chaos is an illusion and, in an illusion, the power of reality is broken leaving only madness."

He continued walking but did not speak. He wanted to know how much of this she understood before he continued lecturing.

Meili Mitali Zalika

Meili nodded at his first remark.
"but then is it really chance? or is it fate? It is not mere chance that brings people together. the force of chaos is not omniscient."

She smirked at his second comment.
"to touch upon the principles of Order and Chaos is to touch upon the very principles of the universe we live and breathe in. Order is so weak, and chaos is so strong. The world moves naturally towards chaos, while people try in their power to keep and uphold law and order. Chaos is like the darkness... it has no substance on its own, but it appears in a lack of its opposite."

She sighed, almost dreamily. It was an interesting topic, indeed.

Sado

"You speak of them as if they were different," he answered, "That is only a perception. Perception is slave to illusion, not to reality. We exist as mere shadows of things that are real. To truly understand a thing, you observe it directly, not its shadow. Chance is both chaos and law, my dear. Nor is Chaos the same as randomness. Chaos appears to have strength to those who have an incorrect perception of what the balance between chaos and order ought to be. In reality, chaos and order are two sides to one person. Fate and Chance are lovers eternally and inextricably intertwined. Any lovers who immerse themselves into each other cease to be two individuals and become one, regardless their differences beforehand. There is no greater authority than Chance, who carefully plans out every step laid into our path according to a pattern which appears to we shadows to be random.

Was it mere coincidence that we have met on this night in this desolate place? Quite assuredly, yes. By the sovereign will of Chance alone have we met. However, the true force of unpredictability and randomness arises not from the chaos of the universe, but in the chaos of we shadows, who, upon meeting, had a choice to speak or keep our peace. To pause to recognize each other or to pass on by. We are the agency of chaos as you see it, not Chance. For Chance is a real person while we shadows live in only half of a real existence. Our illusory existence allows us to become spontaneously random and unpredictable and likewise for our illusory environment to randomly affect us. It is the source of our free will. Our illusory existence gives us the freedom to act outside the jurisdiction of order by shattering the single law of the universe into millions of human sized pieces which each chaotically follow their own perception of law. To us, law and chaos are different because we do not submit to the authority of Chance."

"chance is a master of order and chaos then?" Meili nodded. "you are certainly right, however, and you coverd it in an eloquent matter. I... almost feel like I shuold add to that, but you have said what needs to be said, and there is little else I could contribute."

She raised an eyebrow, still interested in this unusual figure speaking to her.

"Chance counts each breath we take from our allotted portion; empty words waste them," He told her simply. He was not a man to banter or speak idly. His good eye watched the ground beneath his feet, picking out the footsteps his feet were about to make with delicate care and pausing only briefly to scan the stars occasionally to check his course. His spear was used to keep balance and take weight off his legs when the sand shifted from under him. He estimated he would take another thousand or more steps before requiring rest. Hopefully he would take them all before sunrise. It wasn't wise to travel the desert in the heat of the day.

"Then you understand why I do not say more." she replied bluntly, and said little else. She did not need to be barefoot for her to dig her feet into the sand and pick up any sudden movements in her nearby radius. he was still close enough to be in that radius as things stood, but she hardly expected any kind of attack.

More than anything, she was ready to compress some earth around her and continue on her way... wherever she was going, anyways.

Sado

Sado stopped suddenly, red-yellow eye rolling round in his head just before his entire body followed in an explosion of movement. His free hand clamped itself firmly across her face and jaw, holding her mouth closed. Then he pulled his face in close to hers to where even in the darkness of the Desert night, she could see the scars on his face and the emptiness of his eyepatch. A dark finger blackened in the dim lighting by dried vulture-hornet blood split his lips in the middle as he whispered around it,

"Shh."

Then he let her go and resumed his trek as if nothing had happened.

Meili narrowed her eyes when he looked at her, and waited until he had let her go before doing anything. She did not move from where she stood, but watched him continue on his way. When he got far enough away, she would take a guess at his path (in case it made any turns or twists) and take the fast way ahead--the earth.

it was a game of waiting now.
