Name: Nia Law -Middle name exempt-
Gender: Female
Age: 26
Nation: None, but calls the Northern Air Temple home
Birthplace:Unknown
Profession: Mechanist
Title: Personality: ---Overview---
At first sight, Nia appears to be quiet and a tad shy. This is only due to her tendencies to prefer introverted thought to socialization.
Once one gets closer to her, however, they discover that she actually has quite a bit to say, and that she's quite the genius mechanic as well. She often enjoys taking on situations more humorously than aught else, unless the situation demands otherwise. Such leads to her often joking about those around her and usually causes others to believe she can't be serious.
Ontop of her often humorous disposition, one can note countless eccentricities within her action. Among which are her tendency to read while she walks, always carrying a book with her; her tendency to sleep only once every other day; showering at the strangest times; tinkering with her odd guantlets when she gets nervous; prefering to kneel in chairs rather than sit on them; and her genuine love of all technology often distracts her from whatever may have held her attention before. These are few among many that one could note in her natural actions.
While she may find much humor and might be considerred eccentric, Nia is actually quite concerned, loving, and persistent. She often is the one who talks to friends and helps them with their troubles, or even is just there to distract them in the least. She is the first to jump in and aid even a stranger who might need aid, and shows no regret for helping others.
As for her persistence, once Nia devotes herself to something, it seems that she singles it out and starts formulating the tasks set before her. This devotion has earned her not only her vast experience and knowledge in engineering, but has often earned her some respect among those to which she has loyalty.
---Hobbies/interests---
Nia's greatest hobby lies in her love for anything and everything mechanical or technological in general. She obsesses over technology and everything pertinent to it and loves more than anything to tinker/improve/work with or even just examine new things. More often than not, even, she is found in her workshop improving and designing her machinations.
From a young age she had this love of technology, but she showed interest even in just studying sciences themselves. While she doesn't take part in other sciences much, yet cannot find herself able to put books on the many subjects down-- even those of greatly advanced levels. This has lead to her hobby of reading nearly every free moment she has if she isn't tinkering away at technology she has with her.
---Style of Fighting/Bending---
In every aspect of Nia's fighting, her love for technology shows true and fully. And even her personality and way of viewing the world is reflected in her every motion, but her fighting preferences are more conservative and counter-lenient than aught else.
While when angered she might assail an opponent, she will most often take every chance to defend herself and counter-attack while her opponent is vulnerable to wear them down and render them unable to fight further.
Abilities:
General Combat: Nia is found as a strange combatant due to her way of approaching fights. She uses intellect and tactics to predict her opponent and to counter attack rather than push an offensive. She bends in strange ways, bending not the element itself, but all the small portions of them in a micromanaging way. This leads to her able to bend many things at once, but often can make her easily distract from bending when doing so.
She tends to move quickly, chosing to change the ground she's holding rather than stalwartly hold one spot.
Earthbending(Intermediate):
Nia first began to learn earthbending on her own, but found she quickly grew bored of the techniques and mindset involved with it-- such were things that simply did not fit her. Unlike most benders, instead of focusing on general portions of earth to move, she would view that which she bended in countless smaller segments and move each one individually as a whole, making her bending methodical and precise instead of the usual adamant approach to the element. While it made her earthbending slow and inconvenient, it was the gateway into metalbending, which Nia herself found she vastly preferred to the dull ideas behind normal earthbending. She swiftly began studying it further. A perfect match for one in love with technology.
Metalbending(Expert):
Nia's strange way of bending made her earthbending lacking, but was a perfect fit for metalbending. She quickly discovered early in her life she could not only bend metal better than she could ever bend earth, but that it came more naturally to her than the latter. She found various ways on her own to bend the earth to her will from tinkering with her bending every day in her life as an engineer.
She learned to to metalbend according to her own way of thinking, to focus on it rather than change how she approached it. She used this knowledge to refine her technique and become an expert metal bender, on a slow and devoted path to mastery. But her love of technology was her true drive to bend metal.
Her dedication to mechanics drove her metalbending to it's precision and speed, always toning it by creating new devices and technology from metals she even had created herself from metalbending and what little she knows of earthbending.
Nonbending:
Nia's skills outside of bending are both various and strange when integrated into fighting. She uses technology in tandem with her fighting, and is very acrobatic and athletic, though her hand-to-hand is not fit for combat, though she is working to tone her techniques for such.
Martial Arts(Intermediate with Expert grappling):
Nia's martial arts tend to focus on quick kicks and punches, though the strength behind these leave much to be desired, they are precise strikes and can, with many strikes, make an opponent quite hurt. But this is too inept for practical combat.
Though Nia's deffense while against a martial combative opponent are solid at best, and can protect her well; her defenses can be easily overwhelmed under constant or heavy assault and leaves her vulnerable to stronger or quicker opponents.
One of Nia's best martial arts skills and her only one she's close to being an expert of is grappling. She is able to use leverage and balance well to throw, grab, or manipulate her opponent through physical contact. Most prevalent is her ability to subdue them and put them into holds that even a very strong or agile opponent may find difficult to break out of. Such grapples can even leave the most masterful exposed while against more than one opponent, leaving Nia only to use martial throws and tosses while in combat against multiple opponents.
Acrobatics(expert):
Leaping, dodging, rolling, and generally moving/getting around in or out of combat is one of Nia's fortées, making her hard to hit in a fight, and able to get around quickly in or out of one. She's even found ways to manipulate her metallic apparel to perform stranger feats of acrobatics, such as 'double jumping' and being able to move herself somewhat whilst midair. This can also allow her to leap farther and higher. A problem with the latter, though, is she can't slow her falls- she is not even close to the acrobatics of an airbender- and is vulnerable to accidentally leaping too high or far and hurting herself.
Technology[For fighting] (Debatable/indeterminable skill level):
Nia's perhaps most unique and odd techniques are the use of technology she often carries with her. Most prominently the elbow-length gauntlets and the knee-length sabatons are her most proficient and applicable weapons of technology. She has been known to use her wirelike grappling line for entangling and tripping opponents from afar and the like.
Appearance:
Height: 5'9.5"
Weight: 118 Lbs lean, lightly toned
Eyes: Black-Blue
Hair: Short, sandy blonde
Nia is neither very tall nor short, though her body is very lean and has some tone from her bending and the tasking job of being a mechanic. However, this leaves her form with much to desire in the areas where other women hold more prominent curves, though she still holds some feminine allure in such areas.
While Nia doesn't know much of her ancestry, it's clear by her skin's naturally tanned tone that at least one of her immediate parents were of one of the Water Tribes, and while her curves are lacking, she actually has a somewhat comely face; that is if ever there was a moment she chose to wash away the grease and carbon-smudges that seem ever present on her cheeks, nose and even in her hair.
As far as Nia goes, one could not discern any nation from her garments, nor the fact that she's among the Dragonbone pirates. She often sports a forest green long-jacket that reaches to her shins and is covered in various pockets and pouches, this often is over a tight-fitting shirt that rarely covers the stomach and tight denim pants built to endure the hardships of a mechanic's daily regime.
Weaponry & Other Gear:
While Nia is lacking in the department of traditional weapons or armor, she uses a variety of technological devices to aid her in situations of need. These are not always limited to the following, but those on this list are her most prominent designs she uses most often.
Nia's Concussive Boots and GauntletsMaterials: Various, but the chassis and plating are high-carbon steel.
Description: These sabatons and gauntlets seem quite plain on first glance, but a little bulky. However, each can house up to four explosive charges that, when detonated, release a concussive blast that is directed forward into a short-distance [No more than three feet from the release point] pulse that can knock even a burly man off their feet. The impact can cause minor trauma, but the blast is incapable of shredding or burning anything, making it more of a weapon to keep an opponent away or knock them into something hard.
The greatest design flaw of these devices is that they are prone to easily overheating from igniting the charges, and can fire no more than one charge every dozen or so seconds as a result. The devices even lock out to prevent over-use and damage from such. However, each charge has ceramic casings to prevent detonation via heat, though such can only deviate such disaster, not make the charges immune to it.
Vision-Augmentive GogglesMaterials: Various, but mainly quartz and aluminum alloys.
Description: While generally without much more use than eye-protection, the right lens can detach and cover the left at various distance for between 2x and 4.5x light concentration. Good for scouting objects from a long distance away, or for examining tiny mechanical pieces.
Blast ShieldMaterials: Various steels.
Description: Normally an unassuming block of metal hanging from Nia's tool belt, this can be swiftly metalbended into a 2'x4'6" shield with an oddly curved design and strange texture. It is built with various steels and is designed to spread heavy impacts throughout its internal structures to absorb the force of physical and concussive impacts alike.
Grappling WireMaterials: Spider-scorpion Kevlar laced with steel wiring. Tip is solid steel.
Description: Not much to say but that Nia carries it with her in one of her belt's pouches everywhere she goes. It has some combat use, but is mainly utilized for transportation in a metalbender's hands.
History:
Much fortune shined upon the child when that day of rain and sleet came. It was then one of the few monks among the inventors at the Northern Air Temple had been caught near the shore's beaches. Unable to take flight in the storm, he sought for cover from the hail and rain. There seemed to be an odd structure, heavily improvised in design near the edge of the beach, but the water was brought high by the storm, and the crude structure would soon be taken by the waves. He turned to find refuge elsewhere, but the cries of an infant caught his ear past the batter of the storm.
Within the structure had been a child, not another soul in sight. With the infant obviously malnourished and ill, the monk strived to return her to the temple. It was here that she was named Nia, after the monk's wife who had passed away in such a storm, and she was raised as an inventor in the Northern Air Temple.
While Nia's heritage is unknown, she was born an earthbender, if a strange one. However, she waived her skills in this for anything but utility, making her bending precise and methodical instead of the required states of stalwart and forceful required to truly bend the element. With such in mind, she always found learning to create tools and weapons for herself to use more efficient than bending.
Some of the other inventors at the temple described Nia as brilliant, though somewhat socially awkward. Though she rarely spoke to her fellow engineers and tinkerers, she listened to every theory, every lecture and lesson and took them in and put them into practice. It seemed no idea was out of her reach to make reality, and she transfixed her undivided attention to learning the ways of technology and invention. She had no family nor any friend from her socially reclusive tendencies, so she gave her love and devotion to science and invention. She worked at it tirelessly throughout her life, ignoring the itches to explore the world while she worked hard at becoming an engineer of masterful intellect in the fields of technology.
There is always more to learn of technology, but it seemed Nia had learned all she wanted from the professors at the temple, and turned outward to explore the world and discover the advances of the other nations... But where to begin?
The answer came surprisingly soon, and at the age of 25, Nia boarded a passing pirate vessel in the dark of night. Weeks later, the stow-away was discovered and joined the Dragonbone crew after showing her massive skills with mechanics and others forms of engineering that would greatly aid the crew in all their exploits. As a bonus, Nia was now part of a notorious group able to go wherever they pleased, and often did. This was her chance to truly observe all corners of the known world and its technology.
A year has passed among the Dragonebone Pirate clan, and Nia has made for them nearly anything they wished her to make, given they could provide the resources. She is also now in charge of augmenting new ship parts and repairing the old. She also tends to add some of her own bells and whistles every now and again, fair work to see the Nations and their technology.
