Tarek Raiden

The two men stopped suddenly and stared at Tarek and Shula. All of a sudden they attacked, almost as if they knew what the other was thinking. The earthbender reached behind him and pulled up a large boulder from the ground. Without warning, he launched it at Shula. Instead of simply throwing it at her he let it arc diagonally in the air as he aimed for Shula. His barefoot turned on the ground beneath at the same time, lifting a rocky outcrop from behind Shula, and pulling it towards her.

As this was happening, the combustion bender attacked Tarek, who was also standing ready in a defensive stance. He instantly let loose a series of explosions from his forehead in Tarek’s direction. Tarek had little time to react and lifted his hands to try and bend the fire away, but the force of the explosions was too strong and Tarek flew backwards through the air. He quickly used two jets of flames from his hands to stabilize himself in the air and stop himself from crashing into the ground. He scanned the ground for his opponent as he floated in the air and soon saw him directly below.

Tarek dropped down, shooting massive balls of flame down at the man as he descended. The combustion bender’s eyes widened and he was forced to shoot up at the flames to disperse them before they reached him. As he finished deflecting Tarek’s last attack, Tarek landed on him, kicking him squarely in the chest. The combustion bender fell to the ground with a thud, but quickly got up as if nothing had even happened. “What the hell?” Tarek thought to himself as he ducked out of the way of one of the man’s punches. This was going to be harder than he thought.

Shula Njoo

As Shula flicked the sansetsukon slightly, to loosen her muscles, the earthbender reached behind him and pulled a boulder up from the ground; she was taken aback slightly by this suddeness, and as she would've moved backwards, she was pulled forward by a pillar of rock behind her. With an unbidden curse, she hooked the sansetsukon over the top of said outcrop and pulled herself upward and over the pillar, ducking behind it. As the boulder collided with it, breaking into quite a few pieces, she held her breath and looked to Tarek.

She watched as he was blown backwards by the combustion bender, but that was all she had time for, as suddenly the rock which had been sanctuary became an imprisonment. She barely rolled out from under it before it came crashing onto the Earth's crust. With a look of disgust at the sansetsukon, she discarded it; this was a bending battle, weapons need not apply. She ran forward, closer to the earthbender; he began sending up pillars under her feet. She began moving in a zigzag formation, unwilling to allow herself to be blown sky high, before flipping in the air towards him and launching a massive spiral of flame at the earthbender. The man sent a wall of rock up to shield his body at a diagonal, which Shula gladly landed on and slid down as her flames dispersed.

Close-combat was usually her specialty, but she backed away almost immediately as the earthbender, who she now nicknamed Burly (and the combustion bender Ripped) [hee hee. bodybuilder puns. XD] was now lifting a giant circle of earth from under her as she stood on it. Too close, too close, came a frantic whisper in her subconscious, as she began flipping forward off of the earthen circle while it folded in half and slammed together as two cymbals might. Crushing her seemed to be his only plan of action.

She landed behind Burly, her back to him, and she elbowed him in the lower back, near the kidneys. She felt her elbow collide into his wall of bare muscle, and felt pain rack up her arm. She stepped away as he turned around, looking more angry than hurt. She launched herself into the air again, rocketing herself a little bit away from the earthbender, bending a massive bolt of electricity his way as she did so.

Close combat. Bad idea, Shu, the voice chided as she landed a few feet away from Burly and sending multiple strikes of lightning at him; he kept using earth to protect himself. He was too fast. Eventually, she turned to what she called 'electrical whips'. Not unlike the water-whip, she found this attack to be quite useful. Forming a cone of earth around himself, the electrical whips did nothing, and she ran towards said cone, running up the side and holding herself in the air above it with flames shooting out of her feet--her boots were totally trashed by now.

She began sending a massive pillar of fire down at the cone, increasing the temperature within. He'll have to come out at some point! the little voice cheered. She occasionally had to stop bending out of her feet to descend a little bit as the pillar striking the cone was sending her upward at an alarming rate. Eventually, the earthbender burst out in a suit of earth; when safely out of the fire's reach, the shell was dropped and he was totally unharmed.

Cursing again, she continued sending volleys of flame at the earthbender, now on the ground again with her chi heating her feet so that she didn't freeze in the snow. He repeatedly dodged, although now on the defensive; she continued like this for a few minutes, growing more confident, until suddenly she was sandwiched between two stones. D'amn it! Head in the game, idgit! With her lack of experience in fighting earthbenders, she'd allowed herself to be caught by such a rudimentary skill.

He began slowly crushing her. She could feel it, he was enjoying this as he sealed her within, encasing her completely and blocking out the sun--her source of power! She was gradually feeling the space growing painstakingly smaller, but knew that screaming or beating on the walls would do nothing. Instead, she began taking deep-breaths, searching for the sun's energy outside of the ball of earth. What she was going to do next would probably harm anyone in close range--especially herself; what the combustion bender did, she knew the concept behind, and could do something not unlike it. But not well--it was unstable and volatile. [FYI, this is in her profile under abilities.]

Besides, with her sealed inside this ball of earth, Burly was probably right outside. Which meant he'd get hurt too, and Tarek wouldn't have to worry about him anymore. She only hoped he could hold his own against the combustion bender, although part of her knew he could.

Finally, she bent the smallest flame manageable into her palm, taking a deep breath and screwing her eyes shut as her knees pressed into her face, and it was all she could do to stop the flame from lighting her own clothes on fire. Die by constriction, or die by explosion, Shu-Shu. Your choice, a voice told her, and she sighed. "Let's go out with style," she whispered, the world suddenly expanding and burning in a bright flurry of oranges and yellows. An anguished cry set her ears ringing--perhaps her own?--as she felt herself flying backwards through the air.

Tarek Raiden

The combustion bender was relentless, throwing punch after punch at Tarek who was now stumbling backwards to try and avoid them. He knew that he couldn’t avoid the man’s frenzied punches forever and Tarek definitely didn’t want to think of what would happen if one of the punches actually hit him.

Tarek ducked under a vicious haymaker and rolled under the combustion bender’s arm. He spun back around toward his opponent and took a more aggressive stance. The combustion bender instantly turned his head towards Tarek and shot a cascading wave of explosions out of the tattoo on his forehead in his direction.

Tarek took a deep breath and leapt forward, toward the approaching explosions with his arms and hands wreathed in flames. As he reached the first explosion he thrust his hands into it and pulled his arms apart, tearing through the flames of the explosion and bending them around him as he landed right in front of the combustion bender, ready to strike.

As Tarek’s feet hit the ground he brought his hands forwards, releasing a massive fire blast at his opponent. The combustion bender quickly raised his massive tattooed arms to guard his face and chest as the fire blast pushed him backwards. Tarek didn’t stop and with one smooth motion he darted forwards ready to follow up on his attack as his opponent slid backwards.

Tarek ran towards the combustion bender, releasing a flurry of fireballs as he closed in. He managed to get a look at Shula as he ran towards his opponent and saw her using ‘electrical whips’ on the earthbender. He was impressed by her power, and had no doubts that she could handle the bounty hunter she was facing. Tarek quickly turned his attention back to his opponent; his fire blasts seemed to be hurting the combustion bender as they hit him one after the other, pushing him back even further.

There was a good deal of smoke around the combustion bender as he was bombarded by Tarek’s powerful fire blasts. He couldn’t use earth or rock to protect himself as his earthbending partner could, but he was still very tough and was taking a great deal of punishment, much more than any average person could, a fact which worried Tarek as he continued his fiery onslaught. Suddenly the combustion bender let out a loud roar as rage-fuelled explosions started appearing all around him. Tarek’s eyes widened as he felt a tremendous amount of energy being summoned by his opponent. A huge explosion materialized besides Tarek and threw him through the air and onto the snow covered ground.

The next thing Tarek knew, the combustion bender was standing over him. Tarek tried to get away but was quite injured and disorientated from the explosion and the soft snow he was lying in didn’t make it any easier. The combustion bender grabbed his neck with one hand as he lifted him up into the air. Tarek gasped for air as the combustion bender started squeezing his hand tighter, choking him. Tarek instantly grabbed the man’s tattooed arm and started firebending through his hands, heating them up in an attempt to free himself from the bounty hunters grasp. Tarek could hear the sound and could even smell the man’s flesh burn underneath his hands, but the man showed no other physically reaction. He looked up at Tarek with a frenzied smiled, like he enjoyed watching Tarek struggle as he slowly began to suffocate.

Tarek would have tried something else but the man was incredibly strong and he just kept squeezing Tarek’s neck tighter. Tarek found his vision start to blur and his strength start to fade as the man continued strangling him. He managed to catch a glimpse of Shula, who also seemed to be in trouble as the earthbender started crushing her inside a ball of earth. “Come on Shula!” he thought to himself when suddenly and without warning the ball which Shula was trapped in burst open with a loud booming sound, shooting fire and raining rock and earth all over the snow covered field.

The combustion bender instantly turned to see what had just happened and Tarek saw his chance. He delivered a precise, fire-fuelled punched directly at the man’s forehead tattoo. The combustion bender let out a pained roar and dropped Tarek as he thrust his hands onto his now badly burnt forehead. Tarek fell to the ground and gasped for air, he felt energy well up inside him as inhaled and he looked up at the combustion bender with now bright, orange-glowing eyes. The combustion bender looked like he was in a lot of pain and Tarek knew that this was his chance to strike. He started separating the negative and positive energies in his body, causing sparks to form around his fingertips, as he prepared his attack.

Tarek stood and thrust his extended index and middle fingers into the man’s chest, releasing a massive bolt of lightning through his arm and fingers. There was a bright flash and loud sound as the man cried out in pain for a short moment before going completely limp and falling lifelessly into the snow. Tarek sighed with relief and rubbed his throat, “it’s over,” he thought to himself as he looked down at the man and the smouldering wound on his heavily tattooed chest. Tarek’s eyes suddenly widened, “Shula!” he said anxiously to himself as he turned around to see what had happened to her and the earthbender she was fighting.

Tarek began frantically searching around to try and find her. He noticed her opponent lying seriously injured in the snow as a result of the powerful explosion she had created, but he was not a concern and Tarek kept searching. Not much time passed before Tarek spotted her, he immediately ran up towards her, “Shula!? Are you alright?!” he asked with a concerned voice.

Shula Njoo

Blackness was pulling at her. Where was she? The voice that had helped her through the battle was silenced now, and she could feel pain as she tried to breathe in and out. Pounding and high pitched squealing in her ears made her feel as though her head might split, and a half-bitten cry rang against the sound. What was happening?

Outside of Shula's confusion, burns along the right side of her body seemed to glow with a rusty color against the pale snow. Her hand, forearm and thigh seemed to get the worst of it; those were third degrees, while a few more along her ribs and calves were calmer. Mere second degree burns, a natural occurance with firebenders. There were a few more on her shoulder and neck (first degrees), but those barely registered compared to the others.

Her traveler's garb was almost fully intact, although one side of her right thigh and areas along her ribs were exposed. She'd landed face down, and the snow helped keep the pain at bay, although her breathing was a little troubled. Moving slightly, a yelp sounded as she turned her head to breathe, her cheek now pressed against the snow.

Inside of her mind, nothing was making sense. Was that Tarek's voice behind all of the ringing and pounding? All she wanted to do was sleep. Tarek, shut up, she said, waving an arm at him like she used to do with her father when she was younger and didn't want to wake up for lessons. Or so she thought. She made no motion, no sound, only breathing.

She became vaguely aware of being both painfully hot and terribly cold; the burns and the snow, causing more confusion. She moved to get away from both, only increasing the fire of the burns but relieving the freeze. She ended up on her back, attempting to open her eyes.

Searing pain took her sight for a moment as she almost blacked out; her eyes had finally opened and she found herself looking directly at the sun. She immediately blinked, groaning. "Tarek?" she eventually asked, sitting up and gritting her teeth. She was fully aware now, and the ringing in her ears subsided enough so that she could hear without trouble. The pounding was still there, and as she touched a hand to her head, she could feel a bump.

"Ugh," was the next thing she said, as she could count this as one of the top five times she doubted she could feel worse.

Tarek Raiden

When Tarek eventually got to Shula, he realised just how injured she was. He immediately noticed bad burns on her hand, forearm and thigh, as well as some lighter ones along her side. She also looked pretty dazed, like she had taken a hard hit to the head. He knew better than to try and wake her, move her or even try and help her up until she had regained most of her senses as it could have been dangerous.

He looked around at the scene around them, noticing the crater left by Shula’s attack while she within the assassin’s ball of earth. The power Shula had released was striking. Tarek had no doubts that the Fire Lord would be exceedingly powerful, but seeing what she had done first hand, had just confirmed it in his mind. Sheer power, however, was not what necessarily impressed Tarek, it was the fact that she had put herself at risk to stop these assassins, and that she had, for all intents and purposes saved Tarek’s life, whether it was intentional or not.

Despite the fact that he detested Novai and that he already told Shula that his allegiance lay with her, he now saw her in a different light. He saw her as someone he could follow, someone who could lead the Fire Nation into a new era of peace and prosperity. Of course she might just have been reckless, carelessly disregarding her own safety as she performed her attack, though Tarek didn’t see it that way. Whatever would happen from now on, Shula would have his loyalty.

“Yes, it’s me,” Tarek answered with a smile, glad to see that she was coming around. He helped her sit up, “We got them,” he said as he turned his head and looked toward the two dead assassins, “and now we need to get you to a healer,” he announced, “the sooner the better.” He knew that it was best for waterbending healers to treat burn wounds as soon as possible. “Can you walk?” he asked in a concerned voice. Shu Jing wasn’t far and Tarek would have no problem carrying her back to town if he had to, he just didn’t want to assume that she couldn’t.

Tarek knew that going into any town now, would be dangerous. They were both on the run, and he knew that the two assassins they had just fought would not be the only people looking for them, but he knew that Shula needed proper medical attention, and that they would have to go back into town to get it. Disguises were probably going to be in order, but he would worry about that when they got closer to town. “Shula, I think we will need to go back into town…I know a little herbalism, but even with it, the risk of your wounds getting infected is too high,” he said to her, wanting her opinion before he dragged her into possibly dangerous situation.

Shula Njoo

“Yes, it’s me,” Tarek said and Shula felt a bit of relief at the sound of his voice--he seemed unharmed. As she sat up, a hand came to help her and she blinked a few more times to steady her vision. “We got them, and now we need to get you to a healer, the sooner the better.” He said; first she surveyed the area, noting the crater and the two bodies--dead or simply unconscious, she didn't care either way.

She looked down at herself at the mention of a healer; the right side of her body didn't look so good. She nodded--while tough when she had to be, she wasn't stupid. If they had the ability to fix her up, she was going to take that opportunity. “Can you walk?” he asked her, concerned. Her mind seemed to be running slightly slower than usual; probably a result of a concussion, she didn't like it. The difference was noticeable, even to her.

"I should be fine to walk, though if I could lean on you it would make it a bit easier." She said, moving to stand. Most of her weight was on her left leg, as she was perfectly fine on that side, and was standing steadily within a few moments.

She was assuming they were going back down to Shu Jing. She couldn't imagine going into a different town, especially since the nearest one was miles and miles from here. She frowned slightly, as going back to Shu Jing could be dangerous, though she was hoping that the mercenaries who had come after them came alone. She'd been on the run for quite a bit now, and she understood that as soon as they saw a healer, they'd have to get out of there.

“Shula, I think we will need to go back into town…I know a little herbalism, but even with it, the risk of your wounds getting infected is too high,” Tarek said, and she nodded slowly.

Part of her debated over having Tarek do what he could until they could get to a safer area. Looking down at her burns though, she realized that Tarek was right and an infection could be fatal with how many she had acquired. They stung quite a bit, but she was very experienced with burns and the forefront of her mind was able to ignore it.

"I was thinking the same thing; I'm a terrible healer, so we're a bit screwed in that aspect. What of you? Were you harmed?" She said, looking at him with concern. As she did so, she caught a more thorough glimpse of the area behind him and examined it quickly. "Should we even attempt to cover this up?" She asked, gesturing towards the debris, not knowing how they were going to do so if that was what he wanted. She didn't care if they left the war zone--and the bodies--well enough alone.

"My apologies for this entire debacle; it was never my intention to suck you into all of this political nonsense." She frowned. Perhaps if she had stayed with The Underground it would've been better--though she was glad to have met Tarek, and the fight with the mercenaries was more fun than she'd had in quite a long time.

Tarek Raiden

Tarek sighed in relief as Shula began moving around more freely and seemed to be recovering from her dazed state. "I should be fine to walk, though if I could lean on you it would make it a bit easier." She answered in reply to Tarek’s earlier question, moving to stand up. “Of course,” Tarek replied as he quickly helped her up onto her feet and gently slung her arm over his shoulder, allowing her to lean on him for support.

Tarek took a careful step forward into the snowy ground. Snow was rare in the Fire Nation, but not unheard of so high up in the mountains. One thing that was for sure was that firebenders were definitely not used to the cold. He quickly spotted that Shula’s boots were trashed and realized that hiking through the snow would be extremely painful and dangerous for Shula. He immediately scooped up her legs, cradling her in his arms as she lay across them. He heated up his arms as well, to ensure that she stayed warm. “We might have to get you some more clothes too,” he said with a kind smile, trying to make light of the situation.

"I was thinking the same thing; I'm a terrible healer, so we're a bit screwed in that aspect. What of you? Were you harmed?" She asked, looking at him with concern. "Should we even attempt to cover this up?"
Tarek smiled. “A few scrapes and burns, nothing too serious…after all I didn’t combustion bend from inside a ball of rock,” he said looking down at her, “that was incredible Shula…dangerous but incredible…” he continued. “Your concern is…appreciated,” he acknowledged in a sincere tone. “and let those bastards rot there is what I say,” he said in reply to her second question.

"My apologies for this entire debacle; it was never my intention to suck you into all of this political nonsense." She frowned. Tarek shook his head. “You are my firelord, and need never make apologies to me,” he answered sincerely, “Even so, it wasn't your fault at all…I was involved in this political nonsense the moment Novai asked me to join him and betray you and my country…besides I was kinda itching for a fight” He chuckled before pausing for a second, thinking about his next words. “If anything I should be thanking you…you saved my life where I would have gladly given mine…I won’t forget it.”

****************************************************************************

After a long, miserable hike, Tarek and Shula had finally reached the outskirts of Shu Jing. Tarek bought a thick, dark cloak and some boots for Shula, and another cloak for himself at a tailor just outside of town. “Here,” he whispered to her as he put the cloak over her shoulders and lifted the hood over her head, “we can’t be sure if there are more assassins searching for us in Shu Jing.” He continued, helping her slip the new boots on as well. “Luckily the healer isn’t too far into town.”
