Full Name: Yuhi Tategami (Yuhi of the Sunset)
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Element: Air
Birthplace: Forest of Feng Shui
Position: Thief
Personality: Yuhi is nothing like most other girls her age. While most teenage girls are obsessed with clothes, make-up, or - god forbid -
boys, she is much more concerned with mundane matters; like money and knowledge. She is cunning, though not evil; though she is not quite a Robin Hood. While she keeps her ill-gotten gains, she only truly steals from those who are deserving. She particularly likes stealing paintings, as it is blatantly obvious that it is gone. It's her own personal form of irony. She is not just a theft of jewels and money; she is a theft of knowledge. She very often will eavesdrop, just for the sake of knowledge. Knowledge is, after all, power.
She has a beautiful, sparkling personality, hidden beneath a bold mask that is rarely let down. Yet when it is, it's like a ray of sunlight through a pane of ice; beautiful and awe-inspiring. Her personality is complex; at once happy, yet filled with so much anger; protective, yet carefree. As one would just get to know her, new depths to her personality would be revealed. Few things are obvious. She is not afraid to do what she has to protect her family and friends. She is highly devoted to her sickly mother, doing anything to ensure their survival. And, she makes a highly dangerous enemy.
Abilities: She is, quite honestly, a mere novice airbender; and an self-trained one at that. She possesses only marginally-below-basic skills in the core airbending arts, not even capable of the basics that most air benders her age are; creating balls of air, large gusts of wind, or flight. The only skill in which she "on par" with is using air to enhance her physical movements. Yet there are two areas in which she excels; creating blasts of compressed air and creating vacuums. Since this is her specialization, she has more skill in it than the basic airbending skills. Still, her skill is not phenomenal, only able to exert enough force to divert a fist, or cause a minor bruise, and create a powerful enough suction to cling to the wall.
Needless to say, she doesn't rely on her airbending should she ever get into a scrap. Rather, she relies on her natural ability; her short stature, her agility, her ingenuity, and her intelligence. Unlike most, she does not fight by spamming attacks. She analyzes. She strategizes. She improvises. She tests, pushes, bends, until the opponent snaps. And then she strikes. She is like a serpent of the mind and a tiger of the body. Like a snake, she worms her way into the opponents mind, poisoning their thoughts. Then like a tiger, she strikes with ferocity and speed.
Appearance:
Yuhi Tategami wears an outfit fit for her line of work. She wears, quite simply, a white cotton undershirt, hugging her lithe figure quite nicely, and showing off her impressive physique. She also wears a pair of white cotton stockings, cinched at the top, which is in the middle of her thigh. Over this, she wears a brown leather tunic - worn and weathered from use - the neckline showing off clothed cleavage. Just over the right breast is seen a barely embroidered sun and moon, overlaid each other, the moon with faded silver thread, the sun with bronze. Over her legs she wears a brown leather skirt, worn and weathered. They are tied together with the Belt of the Eastern Star. She is shod in brown leather sock-like boots, tying at her ankle.
Height: 4'7
Weight: 70 lbs.
Eyes: Her eyes are like a sapphire frozen in ice; at once cold and warm, hard and soft.
Hair: Her hair is pitch black, as dark as a raven's wing. It is pin straight down to her shoulders, and lays over her left eye.
Weaponry & Other Gear:
Item Name Dagger of the Northern Moon
Materials: Tempered Steel, Black Gold, Pearl, Silver
Description: A beautiful dagger, a blade coated in silver, with a core of tempered steel, fashioned in such a likeness to cause a cascade of light, silver in color, to reflect off the blade, should the silvery light of the moon touch it. When the light of the sun touches it, a cascade of golden light is reflected off the blade. The hilt is made of wood, coated in black gold, with a flawless black pearl set in the pommel; surrounding the pearl is are many small obsidian pebbles, flawlessly polished. The pearl is emblazoned with a silver crescent moon. The sheath is pitch black and ringed with amethyst set in the shape of the crescent moon. It has a very fine point, yet is thin, able to slide between a pair of ribs. The blade is unbreakable through conventional means, though hot enough heat or metal bending may still destroy it. It hangs on her left hip.
Item Name Blade of the Southern Sun
Materials: Tempered Steel, Gold, Bronze, Gold Quartz
Description: A beautiful blade, equal to that of it's counterpart, the Northern Moon. It's blade of tempered steel is coated in bronze. The hilt is made of oak, coated in gold, with a yellow quartz in the pommel; ringing the pommel are many small cirstine gemstones. The Quartz is emblazoned with a bronze sun. The sheath is bronze layered with bright gold and studded with rubies spread across the middle of the blade in the shape of a sun. The blade is thin, yet sturdy, able to hack through armor, yet slip between a pair of rips; yet, it is only a foot long, a mere short sword. The blade is unbreakable through conventional means, though hot enough heat or metal bending may still destroy it. It hangs on her right thigh, immobile so it will not interfere with her movement.
Item Name Belt of the Eastern Star
Materials: Leather, Steel, Silk
Description: A belt, made of silk over leather over chain mail, embroidered with all the constellations of the night sky, is on her waist, tying together the weathered tunic and skirt. It is deep blue, almost black, the constellations being alternating silver and blue. And how it shines! In the moonlight, it is like the stars themselves are collected in that one little space. In the sun, it glows as brightly as a star, yet does not blind. It is a dainty belt, only as thick as half an arms thick, yet is far stronger and lighter than it looks. From it hangs the Northern Moon and the Southern Sun, on the right and left sides respectively. The result is dazzling. On the belt, their are spaces where the constellations open up, as if awaiting additional pieces to be added. Their are two more such places.
History: Yuhi Tategami was born, not in the hospital like most children, or even at the hands of a wet nurse at home; no, she was born on a bed of vines, with the stars as her ceiling and the calls of nature as her nursery rhyme. She was born to parents, hunter's by trade, on a routine hunting trip, what would be the last for her mother. Surrounded by jaguars, her father roaring in anger, the birth pains started. Her mother, caught by surprise, dropped to her knees. They seemed to be doomed ... when suddenly, the beasts scattered as a scream ripped the silence. For what seemed like hours, the scream was long and continuous, splitting the silence of the forest with a racket that quieted even the howling monkeys. And then, it stopped as, with a wet, squishy sound, a new voice joined the silence that now surrounded the forest. Curious forest creatures came to inspect the unfamiliar noise, noses wrinkling at unfamiliar smells.
And so it was that Yuhi Tategami, or Yuhi of the Sunset as she would be known as in later years, was brought into this world, amidst strife and danger in an uncertain world. Yet the danger would not stop there. As they slowly traveled, rather slowly due to her mother's recent hardship, Yuna Tategami began to wither, as if her body was shrinking. She had picked up some disease, some incurable malady, that was slowly destroying her from the inside out. And slowly it would, for it would be many years before she finally died. Yet her father couldn't bring himself to end her life, even as she lay shrinking before him. So, he did what any red-blooded man would do ... he worked.
And worked. And worked. For years, he worked. But a sickly wife and a child who required constant care just were too much for him. And so it was, on the second of the only two days off he takes a year, he died. The official proclamation was from a heart attack; but Yuhi knew the reason. Her father had worked himself to death trying to support her mother and his wife. And from that day, Yuhi knew she was the man of the house now, at the age of 8.
And so, she resorted to theft, one of the few options those as desperate as herself could resort to. With her small frame and natural speed and grace, she was able to scale building and slip into crannies that most thieves couldn't. And she had another advantage; she had yet attained the rough-and-tumble attitude of the older children. Adults laughed her, her wide, open face and deep eyes making them immediately fall in love. After all, who would except the cute little 9 year old next door of stealing?
It was for this reason that she planned her first big heist; the mayor of the town, living on top of Sunset Hill. If she succeeded, she would have more than enough money to take care of her mom and herself. Her strategic and cunning mind coming to the fore, she planned entrances and exits, memorized guard routes, and even knew the location of every individual living in the house at all times of the day. After months of planning and close-calls with the guards, she was ready.
And lo! It was a glorious heist. Everything went off without a hitch ... until the escape. Laden as she was with jewels, rather expensive silverware, and a bag containing items - not yet identified - that sparkled and glowed, she was incapable of watching for ever little item. And so it was that single jewel, no bigger than the tip of a pinkie, fell from the bag at her hip. Fate would have it that it hit the helm of a passing guard. Yuhi had no choice but to run, dropping the silverware and the jewels as she leaped out the window, her bag in tow. She had just enough time to stash it in her bolt hole before she was arrested. She received twenty lashes.
The next half an hour will always remain a blur to Yuhi. A blur, intermingled with grief and pain unimaginable. The whip, barbed with a steel head, will always leave long, jagged scars on her once flawless body. She remained in prison for a month, with only the pain and her despair as the testament of her failure. One thought circulated in her head.
My mother is dead. My mother is dead. My mother is dead ... For without proper care, she would die.
Once released, Yuhi ran home, ignoring the way her scabs broke ... to find the house burned, her few belongings scattering to the wind; a thick, cloying smell clung to the air, familiar to the addled brain of the girl. Her searching eyes, half-blinded by tears, scoured the ruin, looking for some sign as to what.
There! A bootprint! Her sensitive fingers touched it. A bandit? No ... too deep, too heavy. Like the boot of a guard. Her eyes narrowed. Then, she caught sight of a blood smear across the floor boards. Her mind worked frantically. A boot print of a guard ... thick blood stains ... the taunting of her captors ... and a thick, cloying scent, almost like medicine ...
Like a truck, the truth hit her. The guards ... they killed her mother. She fled, tears streaming from eyes that have seen too much, to the only place that was hers now. The bolt hole, tucked into a corner of the Town Square, where she stored all her loot, empty except for one bag. And it was this bag that Yuhi opened with a ferocity few can match, the canvas ripping. She unearthed several things; first and foremost were arms and armor. Though the leather was pitted and worn, the sword belt and sword and matching dagger were near flawless. Next were many scrolls, the topmost describing the basics to the art of air flow; the art of the compression and suctioning of air.
It was from this that she learned her power. She spent years traveling, the arms and armor serving as a constant remainder of what failure truly costs; innocence, and family, and love. She traveled from one end of the Earth Kingdom to the other, reading scrolls and learning, gathering knowledge on basic and advanced Fire and Earth bending, knowledge of whom these scrolls have. And all the while, she honed her skill. Soon, she was a competent sword fighter, a decent Air Bender, and a master at worming her way into peoples minds. And then she arrived the town of Gaoling, intent on robbing it blind ...
