History: Born on the streets of Gaoling to a homeless, single mother with deteriorating health, Katsumi was effectively an orphan her entire life. When she was five, her mother finally took a turn for the worse and perished. From that time onward, she started developing a thick skin by necessity. The entire city was a cesspool of poverty in those days. She certainly wasn't the only one struggling to survive, but she proved to be one of the stronger ones. She was known as 'The Little Tiger' and the orphan gangs in the area gave her a wide birth.

Her reputation, however, attracted the wrong kind of attention. Gangs of real gangsters took notice of the little girl who ruled the back alleys of the poor district. They didn't want their child spies to have to contend with her, so they arranged for her to... disappear. Problem is, their plan failed. At the age of twelve, she outfoxed a trio of enforcers sent by the principal gang boss, Fu Lao. She left one of them dead, his own dagger sticking out of his chest, and the other two in complete confusion. She didn't come out of it unscathed, however. She'd been cut... bad. And within a few hours had wandered onto a country road and collapsed.

Fate, however, transpired to save her. A traveling trader found her on the road. He was bound for Kyoshi Island. He treated her wound and took her with him. She had nowhere to go and no one to turn to. She went with the man to Kyoshi and agreed to remain there in the care of the elders. Before long, she took notice of the Kyoshi Warriors training in their dojo. It wasn't much longer before they took notice of her. The leader of the Kyoshi Warriors at the time, a woman name Ina inducted her into the group and she began training as one of the world's most elite warriors.

Over the course of the next eight years, she became a master of many weapons. The tessen war fans, the battleaxe, the dao, the glaive. However, it was the straight sword and the short spear that truly gained her favor. By the time she was twenty-two, she was renowned for her mastery of both. It wasn't long before her mastery was put to the test.

One battle after the next, Katsumi was tested and in each battle, she proved herself superior to the task. Her skills gained a legend all their own and her weapons earned names that drove fear into the hearts of her opponents. She was elevated through the ranks quickly and her duties were expanded until she was given the opportunity to show her talent as a strategist.

In her first battle as a commander, she devised a simple strategy -- hide the armies under the ground and allow their enemies to march overhead. Then, when the bulk of the enemy force was gathered in key areas, open up the earth and allow the stunned warriors to fall into an underground pit surrounded with Earth Kingdom warriors. Her strategy allowed her force of eight-hundred men defeat a rebel force of almost two thousand.

Her career continually proved her to be a masterful strategist and warrior. At the age of 31, she was brought into the conflict with the Fire Nation. Heavy losses in the initial days of the war demanded the involvement of more elite Earth Kingdom forces. The Kyoshi Warriors were one such group. When they arrived on the front, they immediately began turning the tide of the war. In an effort to give the Kyoshi Warriors the support they needed, Ba Sing Se sent orders for the general army divisions to be placed directly under the command of the Kyoshi Warriors. Katsumi happened to be given command of a company containing a talented earthbender named Meili. Over the course of the two year war, the two of them became comrades, a dynamic duo. Together, they had a key role in defeating the Fire Nation's invasion force. They even scored a decisive victory over one of the most elite forces of firebenders in the world.

By war's end, Katsumi was a general, as was Meili. Their talents allowed them to play the politics of war to their favor and the practice of war to their advantage. The two of them spent the next ten years positioning themselves, Meili in the political hierarchy and Katsumi in the army. When the Earth King died and a power struggle would decide the next monarch, Katsumi sided with her old friend, lending her military support. Together, they easily overpowered all other candidates. Since then, Katsumi's Kyoshi Warriors have expanded by hundreds fold, going from a group of thirty warriors to an army of thousands. As the supreme commander of this mighty army, she assumed a role as one of the members of the council of generals and became Earth Queen Meili's chief military adviser...
