Evening... Travel by night, rest during the day. Katara was not the type of kid who had the heart to end her own life, even if she really didn't have anything going for her. She stayed alive because she did not want the sacrifices made by her friends and families to be in vain. That, and she just seemed to have an instinct for survival. As she trekked through the desert, she son found herself wonderfully lost. No destination was in mind for the young girl, as she literally wandered blindly through the sands of the evening. She found shelter during the heat of the day, walking in the much colder nights, where she used her own bending to heat herself up.
She carried her metal staff with her to make sure that she wouldn't trip over or cut her feet on a sharp rock or something, but otherwise, just blindly wandered through the desert evening. She was barefoot, wearing baggy clothes and armored gloves. her colorless and nearly featureless eyes almost shone in the moonlight, and her somewhat greasy, grizzly appearance was illuminated under the same light. She was dangerous for sure, but very passive as opposed to aggressive. She fought fiercely, but only in self-defense. She had no interest in harming anyone unless they first harmed her.

Aboard a sand sailor with two others shortly behind him, Kuja and several of his warriors had been patrolling the Desert. During such patrols, certain activities were conducted; convoys sent out to inspect new land in order to expand their sphere of influence, warriors searching for hostiles in the area, hunting for wild game in the area, the recovery of water from oasises as well as a series of wells throughout the desert and shortly outside of it, and also possible methods to connect each separated Desert city to Kuja's massive one. On this trip however, there was a smaller amount of warriors due to the presence of their leader, Kuja. He would handle most of the affairs single-handedly, however due to his importance to their civilization, the majority of the citizens desired that a small force accompany him in order to guarantee his security, even though it was unneeded.
Sailing through the waves of the sand, the constant acceleration from the vessel permitted a wind to be streamed through the hair of Kuja. It was a cooling force, allowing him to enjoy his expedition whilst a sandbender bended the sand to create the motion and stabilize the velocity of the ship. He sat on a stationary chair which was placed beneath and behind the sail in order to prevent him from falling from the vessel. If one had not been accustomed to the culture of the sand benders, it would be easy for that individual to recognize that Kuja was a person of importance. All the luxurious treatment he received truly evoked the sense of godliness that Kuja felt as well as deserved. He was the organizer of the Harena, his unified tribe of individual sand tribes all throughout the Si Wong Desert. His people looked to him as a God for good reason.
As several hours passed, it was now night time. The desert was a beautiful scene, however during night, it was perfect. The conditions were cold to any foreigner, however to an inhabitant of the desert, the coldness was relief from the constant ominous force of the Sun. Kuja had sent two of his sailors back to the Harenan city, where they would lock their ships up, sell the food to marketers, and then proceed to rest. Kuja resided with only one other warrior who was the source of the ship's motion. As they sailed throughout the desert, Kuja noticed a figure walking. "Damn, this is about the fourth person I've seen trailing through here this week!". Ordering the warrior to turn the vessel in the girl's direction, Kuja eventually came to a stop just in front of her.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" He asked her rather anxiously.

| Katara's walk was only interrupted by the noise of what was surely someone gliding through the sands... probably natives. She was no threat unless they tried threatening her, and she hoped it didn't come to that, because she was a very poor fighter who had little control over her overwhelming power.
soon she heard voices, one in particular directed at her, asking her something. "Why does it matter?" she asked casually--not out of defiance, but simply out of her not seeing a need to give out that information. "I am a girl without a name lost in a place without a name. I decided to take the phrase "Get lost" a bit too seriously, and here I am."
if she was truly lost, she didn't sound remotely concerned. she did have a bag with her, and what looked like a pair of water skins. Or... maybe she was going to wander till she purposely exhausted those things and let herself die out here. It was hard to tell.
"call me Zelgius if you want." she shrugged, because she also realized that perhaps he was just looking for what to call her. It wasn't the name she commonly went by, but it was her middle name, so it didn't just come out of nowhere. "and I am otherwise doing nothing but leaving footprints in the sand." she curled her bare tows in the sand, enjoying as it went between them. they, her head, her elbows, and her lower calves were exposed, and her long, impossibly curly brown hair went halfway down her back. She was rather pretty, or at least, she would be if she ever did anything to maintain her appearance. her lack of good hygiene showed through her grizzled appearance. she was small, thin... probably only about 15 or 16 years of age... she was no one imposing, nor was she trying to be. However, she fearlessly stood her ground, waiting to see how these sandbenders would react.

Perplexed at the status of this girl in correspondence to her response, Kuja let out a slight laugh. This laugh evolved into a continuous chuckle to which was followed by Kuja's face almost nearly going from a smile, back to a rather blank expression. He eyeballed this girl and notice that she seemed as if her story was actually supported by her appearance, to which it was. She did appear to be lost, an indication of this was that she was barefoot, and she did not appear to be an earthbender which was rather strange to Kuja.
"What does it matter to me? You're wandering around in my Desert supposedly nameless, I believe that it should matter to anyone native to these lands." Kuja rebutted. "My Desert" was a phrase that he grew attached to, however the manner in which he spoke this phrase was in a subtle one. One which only a skilled conversationalist would be able to analyze, anyone else would simply look over it as a change in tone. The girl appeared to be young, reflected by the defiant tone in her voice. "Teenagers...I remember that stage." He thought to himself before continuing his visual examination of the girl. Finally, she offered a name, which Kuja was rather hesitant about believing due to the reluctance evoked by Zelgius.
"This girl seems rather fervent, perhaps a fugitive? Or maybe a runway? Either way, she seems as if she would rather be left alone. Still, these are my lands. I'll bring her back to the city, she seems to be on the verge or pursuit of death. Dying in these lands is something so melancholy that I wish that on no one." Continuing to cogitate to himself, Kuja opened his mouth to begin to speak to Zelgius.
"Well listen," he began ,"You're lost, young, and more than likely cold at her. This terrain is harsh. I'm assuming that you mean no harm to me, therefore I'm going to extend an offer to you." Kuja attempted to have a friendly, empathetic tone to the young girl, however it was a step outside his normal personality. "Get on this vessel with myself and my friend over there, and we'll take you back to our home. You'll be able to rest up, bathe, and feed and in 3 days, we'll escort you to Ba Sing Se, where you'll be able to live much easier than in these lands. Sound good?"

| Katara gave a blank stare back in return. her expression was neutral, though it had a dark, grizzled look to it, especially given her eyes. twin gashes over each one ran, and their dark red color almost indicated that they were sick wounds that had never fully healed. her eyes without color or much in the way of other feature. It was clear that she was blind, and not by birth.
she shrugged, kicking at the sand. "hrm... didn't know anyone owned it. I guess I should get out a bit more." She was not saying this to be rude or defiant; it was just her blunt observation. She didn't know who this was, but then again, she didn't know too many people, important or otherwise. Apparently the Avatar was some woman named Zulera, and the Fire Lord was some woman named Shula. She had no clue about the Water Tribes or Earth Kingdom.
she listened, mostly trying to hear if there were any hostile words or sounds, but to her relief, none came. instead, there was an offer. "I'm fine." she shrugged, "but aye... the world is harsh.. I'll give ya that. As long as you mean no harm to me, I have no intentions of trying to hurt you or anyone else." such were her responses. "I'll take your offer." she also threw in. "thanks..." she shrugged, holding her staff in her hand, poking with it towards the ground.
"Where's this vessel at... can't see and stuff..." she nodded at him, widening her eyes for a brief moment so that he could see. It was somewhat obvious that she was blind, based on the way she moved and the way her eyes looked, but she was fine with making sure that people knew. She didn't expect special treatment from it--she just didn't want to get ridiculed for doing things or asking for things that were in plain sight.
she eventually knocked her staff into it, and climbed aboard. if he wanted a word with her, or if she was standing in a bad place or whatever else... all he'd ave to do would be to say something.

"Ahhh," was all that slithered from the lips of Kuja as he was informed of Zelgius' shortcoming. Blindness. To be shut out from all visuals, the beauty of the world, the elaboration of nature, and the distinction between each person, it must have been a wonder to overcome. Obviously, it required a great deal of strength in order to harness the ability to continue conversation as well as journey alone whilst living in a world of eternal darkness, where the reliance of one's surrounding depended on either their own adaptations to their weakness or on the eyes of another.
However, the girl appeared to be rather content with the illness she suffered. There seemed to be no reference in her manner or speech to the horrible daily tasks she suffered. Instead she remained silent to it all, and the only mentioning of it was in a tone relating to that of a joking manner. She demonstrated the epitome of strength, the ability to maintain tranquility and serenity whilst dealt one of the most unfortunate cards in the game of life.
Kuja approached the girl and looked at the pupils of her eyes. They were black, however they resembled the lack of detail which a common blind person had. "Just walk forward and you'll feel a rather large mass. Climb aboard it and you'll be upon my vessel." Kuja instructed as he turned from the girl and proceeded to walk towards his sand sailor. He jumped up to it's surface and sat down upon the chair he had installed on the ship. As his sand bending associate was on the ship the entire time, he simply awaited for the order of Kuja to begin bending the sailor to embark towards their city.

| Katara was never really a girl of self-pity. She had a will of unbelievable strength, which was the main reason why she kept going after her eyes, her family, and her childhood were destroyed right in front of her. She figured that there was no reason to let those sacrifices be in vain, and that she would keep on keeping on. Forced to grow up much too soon, she had been hardened and lost a great many things in doing so, but it was not completely bad. She gained a few things, including a great deal of knowledge on how the world worked.
She was also determined to overcome the weakness that she had gained. She was vaguely aware that some firebenders developed a 'heat-sense' which they could use to 'see' their surroundings. most of them who had this trait were blind form birth, but it could be taught apparently. she wished to learn it somehow, some way, someday.
She had her staff to prevent herself from bumping or crashing into things. she held it in one of her gloved hands, and in reality, it reduced the amount of swearing she did by several thousand percent, given that it prevented her from stubbing her toes.
Katara could hear him approach and knew he was only inches away from her. her glazed, featureless eyes gazed back up at his, though she did not know what she was seeing. "got it." she nodded. using her staff to make sweeping movements in the sand, she paused when it tapped against the side of the vessel. then she stepped on with little further difficulty. she found something to hold onto and was ready for the ride whenever the sandbenders were.

There was no shame upon the blind face of Zelgius, who searched for Kuja's sand sailor. He sat upon the vessel and awaited for her to find it. Several seconds passed, four to be exact until she had emitted a reassuring ,"Got it." She climbed aboard the ship, and Kuja waved his hand to the sand bender who stood at point aboard the ship. He waved and spiraled his arms rather vehemently, which in turn resulted in the vessel's quick departure from their current location.
There were not too far off from the Harenan City which lied directly in the heart of the Si Wong, therefore the journey would not be long. However, Kuja was not a fan of silence. He opened his mouth and began to speak to the girl, "They say when one sense is capitulated, the rest are heightened."
He was attempting to discover whether the blindness led to the improvement of her hearing or another of her four retaining senses. Kuja was a curious man, he desired to peel through the history of this mysterious girl just as a chef would to an onion.

| Katara climbed aboard, her bare feet making light 'thunk' noises as she stepped up. she was a slightly hunched posture and made heavy steps. Perhaps she was just tired or worn, or maybe she simply needed a lesson or two in how to hold herself. It didn't bother her though, so there was not much of a problem.
she sat down, making herself somewhat comfortable, and soon they were off. Katara did not blink very often, as it seemed that there was very little feeling left in her eyes as well. her messy, curly hair flew behind her as they soared across the sands, though it only flowed in a few masses. she had tangly hair to say the least.
Katara personally enjoyed the silence, and enjoyed being alone. however, such were not alawys options, especially hen now she was technically at someone else's mercy. "they do, mm?" she raised an eyebrow. "maybe so... I guess I'm too young to have realized the difference." she did have a slightly heightened sense of hearing and smell at least, though she also intended to develop the heat sense that some skilled blind firebenders also possessed.
Zelgius Katara was a tough nut to crack, even for something as simple as getting information out of her. She was very wary, and didn't give out information too freely. What she needed more than anything was just someone to understand her. She generally opened up much easier after that.
"why do you ask?" She raised a curious eyebrow.
