Tulkas

The world had changed…

An industrial revolution had begun to sweep across the nations originating in Zulera City, a Dark Avatar had risen and brought the threat of Vaatu back into the world, an extremist group of supremely skilled benders, the Xuri, had attacked the Fire Nation Capital as well as Makapu Village and Fire Lord Tarek, Earth Queen Meili and the new Southern Water Tribe Chieftain had nearly been assassinated. It was these events that pulled Tulkas back from nearly seven years of absence. The White Lotus were needed now more than ever.

Over the crystal clear skies of the Eastern Temple. Above the temple’s central courtyard. Descended a sight not seen in generations. A mighty man clothed in rugged and common attire floated in the air, unaided by any glider or flying apparatus. His golden hair gleamed in the sunlight as it waved lightly in the breeze, and his piercing blue eyes mirrored that of the sky behind him. Crowds of airbenders immediately stopped what they were doing and looked up at the man in awe.

“Fear not friends!” boomed the man’s voice, echoing throughout the mountains “for I am one of you and I have come to usher in a new age for the Air Nomads!” He continued, scanning the crowd intently. “I seek one amongst you named ‘Xilingshi’”
Immediately one of the Tekina Kaze guards ran off in search of her.

“The world has changed!” boomed the man’s voice again, “no longer can the Air Nomads sit in isolation while the other three nations fight for the survival of the world! We are a part of it as much as anyone and if we are to forge a new future in this new world, we must change! We must act!” He descended slightly more now as he continued. “We honor who we are and where we come from, but we were nearly extinct once and by the Avatar we shall not sit idly by and allow it to happen again!” The charismatic airbender’s inspiring speech suddenly drew a deafening roar from the crowd as the cheered and clapped. He was in no way staging a coup to undermine Xilingshi, instead he asserted himself in front of his people, to show them his strength and authority and to inspire them. This way gaining support and loyalty would be a much easier process later.

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

Of all the oohing and ahhing Air Nomads, it was clear to see the one that was not following the crowds. Stubborn and stoic, this Xilingshi Zoraki was not even a very tall or imposing figure--a diminutive woman standing at a mere 5'5", she was unfazed by this glory speech and what have you. Instead, she simply stood there with her arms crossed, her brown hair bouncing in the messy ponytail it was in.

"I am commander Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki," she stated, "tell me more about this new age you wish to usher in for my people." she did not recognize him just yet, and figured that even if he was the man that she thought he might be, that it might have just been a pretender. if it was the real deal... well then she'd listen.

Tulkas

Tulkas’ sharp eyes immediately looked for the woman who addressed him, and when they finally found their mark he grinned happily.  He copied her posture almost, crossing his arms as he descended downwards towards her. “Ah!  Xilingshi!” he said happily, “My ol’ buddy Tarek has told me many good things about you!” he said cheerfully as he landed before Xi, hand outstretched in greeting.  “Do you guys shake or hug or do that weird double cheek kiss thing…I don’t know!” he chuckled with a wink.  “I am Tulkas, and as I bet you suspect…I am not from around here.”

Tulkas took a moment to look around him at the splendour of the Eastern Air Temple.  “Wow!  It’s amazing!” he commented with wide eyes, giddy as a school boy; which was odd to see considering the fact that he towered above all those around him.  “Is it true the airbender toilets throw sewerage out of pipes in the mountain only to fall on unsuspecting passers-by down below?” he whispered as he leaned in close to Xilingshi.  “Don’t answer that!” he interrupted himself, “I’d actually like to find that out myself!” he grinned.

Tulkas suddenly clapped his hands and rubbed them together.  “Right, now that we got that out of the way…you got anywhere we could talk in private?” he asked politely, “and has *anyone* ever told you that orange really is your color!?

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

Xilingshi was admittedly a little bit flustered at the man's words and actions, even if they were very obvious jokes. Not that she didn't have a sense of humor--she just had trouble expressing her emotions most of the times, this time being one of them, and it showed on her face.

"Uhm... right. let's go somewhere private."
Assuming the beast of a man followed her, Xilingshi would lead him to her own office, where she invited him to have a seat. "Anyways, I am merely curious about who you are and your relationship to Tarek. Otherwise, I feel like we can probably reach a peaceful conclusion to this conversation. I do not see belligerence in you." she gave a respectful nod, letting him have a chance to explain who he was and what he wanted/was intending to do.

Tulkas

Tulkas smiled when he saw Xilingshi get all flustered, it showed on her face.  It wasn’t his intention at all, though it did immediately pull down any fronts of hostility.  After all, he did just basically let Xilingshi’s people know that he would be leading them, an act of defiance in every sense of the word.  He nodded graciously at Xi’s request and followed her to her office.

Tulkas took a seat, leaned back and listen to Xilingshi’s questions.  “Tarek?  He and I go way back,” said Tulkas with a grin, “back since the days when he had a full head of hair!  As for whom I am, I am an Air Nomad, but I was sent to the White Lotus many, many years ago and was trained by them to become the Pillar of Air…One of the four chosen to train the Avatar that succeeded Aang.” He explained.  “Look…I am not here to stage a coup or anything…the world has darkened and times ahead are going to be tough…I am here to lead the Air Nomads through it, and I will need your help…It’s time we stopped being observers…it’s time to show the world our strength.”

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

Xilingshi paused and listened to the man's remarks.
"Well... that certainly makes more sense then," she quipped, "a lot more than your original speech, although I suppose you can't exactly tell them what you told me and expect to keep everyone hanging." she might not have been good at socializing outside of war, but Xi knew some secrets to a good arousing speech.

"what are you proposing?" she asked, "I cannot and will not let you seize control of my Tekina-Kaze, and I would rather our units stay as defensive specialists than become aggressors. Not to say that we Air Nomads cannot help- the rest of the world, but our 'army' is far too small to really tip any scales should a large-scale battle break out. we are equipped and trained to defend the four temples, but that is it. What are you proposing we do?"
She wasn't sounding doubtful--she just wanted to hear *how* he planned to revolutionize the Air nomad society--any fool could say they were going to make changes, but it took a wiser man to explain how to make said changes, and an even more talented one to actually carry them out.

Tulkas

Tulkas listened as Xilingshi spoke and couldn’t help but smile.  “Look Xi, before we go any further, I am not trying to seize control of anything.  The Tekina Kaze look up to you and respect you.  You founded them and I wouldn’t dream of parting you with your men.  All I wish to do is lead my people through the dark times ahead.  Despite you representing their best interests…the Council was dissolved and the Air Nomads are leaderless. However, I was raised to lead, trained for war and have seen more in my life than most every dream about… I am not like other airbenders, yet I am one of them…making me an ideal candidate to bring necessary change, while still honoring our ways.  My plan is to forge a formal alliance with Zurok, Meili, Tarek and Nelekar though he is an unknown entity to me and help end the threat our world is facing alongside my friends and with the support of my people.” He said before pausing, “I am not going to throw the Tekina Kaze needlessly into war, but they can offer the world what Tarek’s Generals, Meili’s Armies and Nelekar’s Fleets cannot.  They will be needed in their own way and as far as the change you asked about goes… all airbenders will be given a choice to remain monks, or choose their own trades and professions.  The Temples will grow into cities and our people will thrive on trade and become a relevant force in this new world, instead of distant outsiders…Despite my fondness for my former pupil Zulera, we are losing many airbenders who are seeking to start new lives to Zulera City.  We could keep them here if we changed and we could grow strong together.” explained Tulkas as he pulled out a White Lotus tile and floated it towards Xilingshi.  “I ask only that you trust me as you trust Tarek.  He spoke highly of you, and I will need you to lead the Tekina Kaze as my Commander...however that means that you do acknowledge my rule…” he said plainly.  He respected Xi greatly and admired her for what she had done for the Air Nomads.  But it was time they were united under a king.  The Sky King.

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

The little airbender took the Lotus Tile, flipping it deftly between her fingers as she listened to the man's remarks. "but is Zulera City all that bad?" she asked, "I have seen it myself, considering that I sort of unofficially became the Air Nomad Ambassador for the place. Obviously it is not fit for everyone--the peaceful monks and the ones that are not part of the Tekina-Kaze would probably not last more than 37 seconds there."

"I do not mind the notion of the Tekina-Kaze becoming enforcers of peace and protectors of it, if that is what you mean, but our responsibility is first and foremost to our own people, and then the rest of the world."

"However..." she continued, "If you wish to take control of the Air Nomads as a general society, I can grant you my blessing, however much that might mean. I can then shift my focuses to more critical matters suited for my post, such as managing the Air Nomad military affairs, as well as keeping Air Nomad interests in Zulera City."
"I trust you." she nodded, "if Tarek, Zurok, and Meili all trust you, then I would be foolish to doubt where they place said trust. You have my support." she put her fist to her chest before extending it outwards as a sign of respect. He had gained Xilingshi as an ally.

Tulkas

Tulkas smirked, “Oh no, Zulera city is fantastic, there is always something exciting going on.  All I meant was that our people, more than the other nations, need to stick together.  Our numbers are still few, and although I won’t stop any from moving there, we might give some a reason to stay and help us rebuild.”  The large man leaned backed and scratched his beard for a moment, looking as if he dreaded what he was about to say.  “Xilingshi, I know the responsibility to my people, but if we don’t help our allies, we may not have a people.  The Tekina Kaze are still under your command, but you need to realize something…Respectfully, I came here under the council of my friends in the White Lotus to take leadership and that’s what I intend to do.  I have the utmost respect for the service you have done our people, representing them.  But as King I will expect fealty from all who choose to live in the borders of my lands.  That includes you, and the Tekina Kaze.”  He paused sighing, it was plain to see he wasn’t comfortable with saying the words. “I want you know that I have our people’s best interests at heart and I have Tarek, Meili and Zurok to keep me in line should the need arise, though that will never be necessary.”

When Xi answered and acknowledged Tulkas’ words, he let out a happy sigh, “Well that’s a relief!  I was busy losing my mind being so serious and talkative!” he said as he half collapsed in his chair, “it’s exhausting!”  After a moment’s silence he grinned and looked fondly back at Xilingshi, “I appreciate it though Xi.  You are as wise and level headed as Tarek said…” The beast of a man then suddenly reached for one of his satchels and pulled out a large bottle of alcohol.  “I slipped this from Meili’s personal collection!” he smirked, “you and I are going to finish this bottle and then go do something exciting to finish our awfully serious and boring conversation with some fun!” he said as he quickly downed half the bottles contents, and passed it along to Xilingshi.  “To the Air Kingdom!”

Xilingshi nodded. "well, even with Avatar Aang restoring the Air Temples, I do suppose there's still a lot of work to do. Otherwise, I will wear fealty to you as long as your intentions and actions remain just and good. It is what I do with anyone." Xilingshi was an honest and loyal woman to those she called friends. To those that she called enemies... she was a nightmare. She and her women had been one of the biggest threats to Novvai, and had helped cripple his army during his catastrophic failure that had been the attack on the Eastern Air Temple.

She raised an eyebrow as Tulkas' mood suddenly changed. "Thank you. I do what I can to continue to be a fair voice both for the Air Nomads and for the world in our behalf. And..."
"Oh fuck it. that sounds like a great idea!" she actually cracked one of her rare (and really rather cute) smiles. "I'm in." she reached under her desk and pulled out a bottle of her own ("for afterwards", she added), before grabbing two chalices and setting them out.
"Let's drink!"

Tulkas

Tulkas let out a satisfying ‘aaah’ after the long sip of alcohol.  He relaxed in his chair and chuckled.  “Ha!  I knew you had a little fun underneath all that seriousness!  I’m very glad!” said Tulkas as he held up his drink in toast.  Suddenly Tulkas’ eyes widened as if he had remembered something.  “Oh!  I just remembered something!  Tarek asked me to ask you if it’s secret…if it’s safe?” asked Tulkas in a whisper.  “I am to take over protection of the amulet on behalf of the White Lotus, if you are going to be spending more time in Zulera City.”

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

Xilingshi gave a slow nod. She was not sure if she trusted it in the hands of the White Lotus, simply because she remembered Tarek fearing that he would be too powerful if he touched it.
"It is safe," she assured him, "And while I intend to go to Zulera City now and again, most of my time will be here in the temples with my people. I don't think anyone could resist going to that city at least once, but I am not about to make it my home."

she chuckled. "but aye... it is safe. Let us drink!" She raised her glass before draining it promptly.

Tulkas

Tulkas chuckled.  “You are really not keen on giving it away are you?” he said as he took another swig of alcohol. “Tarek wants me to hide it in an old White Lotus trap room built into the mountain...I’m going to need it.” He continued, looking down at her breasts, “I can feel it…around your neck,” he whispered with a grin, perhaps staring a bit too long, “The White Lotus will ensure its safety from here on out.  Tarek warned me of it's power.  I'll keep it safe Xi.” he said confidently.

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

Xilingshi blushed as she realized that he was staring at her chest, even if it was brief and for a reason other than lust.
"I know you might be all disattached from the world, Master Tulkas," she replied, reaching into her shirt, "but staring down a lady's shirt is not polite." she tried to say that with a straight face, but had limited success.

And thus a second later, she pulled out the amulet, which was simply around her neck rather than between her breasts. it almost seemed to glow in her hands. "Take care of it, and make SURE it's locked up safely. If it ever gets left unattended, someone could very well steal it--and we do NOT want it falling into the wrong hands."
She was not trying to mock or deride Tulkas here, but was saying this with heartfelt concern. She dropped it into his large, outstretched hand, ebfore picking up the bottle again.

"now you wanna drink?" Not that she was going to forget the subject so quickly, but she had to say something to diffuse the awkwardness around them.

Tulkas

Tulkas let out a loud, hearty laugh at Xilingshi’s remark.  “It’s not my fault the orange on your shirt accentuates your bosom in such a hypnotic manner.  Just because I am unattached from the world, doesn’t mean I am not human!” he teased.

Tulkas took the amulet and his eyes flashed blue momentarily, but he strangely didn’t give any other physical reaction to its touch.  “Of course, look… don’t worry…you go bald like Tarek!” he said with a mischievous chuckle, “He gave me the very same speech.  I am a damned Master of air and people worry about me like I’m a child!  It’s disturbing!” he joked.  He tucked the Amulet away and raised his bottle once more.  “Of course I wanna drink!”

Xi blushed. "no it doesn't?!" she exclaimed, glancing down at her cleavage, which she got a lovely woman's point of view of. "...does it?"
She shook her head to change the subject. "anyways... clearly you can understand my concerns though, right? Just... with the whole Water Tribe fiasco a few years back, Novai, and now the Xuri, the mob bosses in Zulera city, and now Robin... you can't be too careful. I just want it to be safe is all, and wanted to take extra precautions. Thank you for understanding."

She nodded, before popping the cork. "To the Air Nomads!" she raised her bottle before taking a long solid drink.
